use of spices with when one has a hiatal hernia

When it says to avoid spicy foods for a person with a hiatal hernia does that mean spices like cinnamon and cloves found in apple crisp etc.????

Usually not.  Usually they want you to avoid pepers and onions - spicy hot food.

Typically when they're speaking of spicy foods, they more are speaking of things like hot peppers, curries, chili, spicy sausages, etc.  However, if you try the cinnamon and cloves and find that they bother you, by all means, avoid them in the future - but I think you would be ok with them.
