very bad stomach ache and stomach cramps sometimes after eating

Hi,
I get a very bad stomach ache and stomach cramps sometimes after eating fruit. It comes on around 3-4 hours after eating it and then gets progressively worse until I am finally sick. It is usually around 9 or 10 hours in to it before I am sick. Once sick, the pains start to very slowly ease and I feel generally much better. I have had an allergy test and am not allergic to fruit. It does not happen all of the time either – if eating fruit every day, sometimes five or six weeks can pass before it happens again. Other times it comes on within a few days of the last episode. I only know this as I limit the amount of fruit I eat because of it, so sometimes just get away with a stomach ache. When it is bad though, I leave it several weeks before I dare eat any more fruit just in case as it is pretty horrible. By the next day, most of the pains will have gone and I will feel ok. Once I start eating though, the first few sets of food that pass through my system make it hurt again quite a lot – as if it is burned or swollen / raw. Despite this, I am pretty sure it is not simply the acid from the fruit as it does not happen all of the time and it is not dependant on an empty stomach.
I think that it is the chemicals that are used on some fruits. Once the fruit reaches the lower depths of my stomach, my own chemicals start to break down the insecticides or whatever has been added during the production process and new chemical are formed – I think it is those ‘new’ chemicals that I am allergic to. Testing such a thing would be very difficult I think and are only guessing with all of it. Washing fruit does not help. The first time it happened it was from a ready-to-eat fruit salad bowl from my local supermarket; plus I scrub and peel the fruit just in case.
Has anyone any suggestions, advice or similar symptoms that they have any additional information about please??
Thank you for your help,
Clive.

It might be a fructose intolerance.  Try researching this and then eliminate the foods that are high in fructose for a while to see if it helps.

I have the same problem with fruits. I am allergic to peanuts so I know what the symptoms feel like when I'm allergic to something. However with fruit...some just give me stomachache pain...sometimes itchy feeling in my ears for very short period and sometimes itchy throat for short period. If I drink soda immediately after eating it helps me I believe due to the soda acid cutting thru the irritants. I have asked many doctors and they all look at me like I'm crazy. Except for one with confidence he explained what I'm experiencing.

Not sure if any of you have same issue or if you haven't really paid attention to this you may want to give it a shot. Example bananas don't bother me as much if they are yellow with a hunt of green on edges of peel...once they are soft or have any brown on peel I can't eat them I'm extremely sensitive to them at that point. Same with melons...nectarines...apricots etc. I have to eat them when they are firm still if too ripe I'm too sensitive to them. The doctor explained to me I'm not necessarily allergic to the fruit I'm allergic to the process the fruit goes through. As the fruit ripens it creates its own chemicals (part of its natural processes) that's what I'm allergic to. So if u eat the fruit at the right stage I'm typically good or have very very light symptoms. Hope this is helpful to at least someone. Happy eating.

HOW TO CHOOSE A WATERMELON WITHOUT NITRATES?

Watermelons appear on the market in August – it is believed that from this time you can buy and eat without fear. Astute buyers prefer to wait until the beginning of September and be sure that the fruit is ripe without additional chemicals. But if the summer was hot, watermelons can start to be sold even in July. Sellers claim that there is no catch in it – just the weather was favorable for melons. Sounds quite convincing, and acquaintances boast that in the middle of the summer, I was eating juicy and perfectly ripe watermelon. How to be: to risk or wait until the fall? In this article we will try to answer your questions and to dispel the doubts.
Ripe and well-grown, watermelon contains a lot of nutrients. With low calorie content, the pulp of the watermelon is a good source of carbohydrates (easily digestible fruit sugar), minerals (especially magnesium and potassium), folic acid. Perfect thirst quenching watermelon at the same time returns the body minerals lost through sweat. Don’t forget about the tissue, positive effect on digestion, and antioxidants that work against malignant tumors. All this makes watermelon a valuable component of nutrition for all, including young children and the elderly. Unless, of course, watermelon does not contain substances that mother nature was not assumed. We are talking about chemicals that watermelon fields are processed to control pests and increase yields. They make many around the stalls with watermelons.
Often watermelons treated with nitrates. It is a salt of nitric acid, which generously feed the soil for growing fruits and vegetables. In fact, nitrogen is really needed by the plant for growth and synthesis of many substances. It is only in the quantity and quality of fertilizers. But it is not necessary to abandon watermelons in fear of nitrates. Enough to know how to pick berries without unnecessary chemicals.
The first thing you should pay attention – this is not the watermelon and trading point, its purity and conditions for the sale of watermelons. Don’t be surprised by the last remark, because melons, unlike potatoes or apples, require special conditions of transportation and storage. Watermelons in any case must not lie on the ground or on the same level with the ground. The minimum height of a wooden pallet for the display of melons and water melons – 10-15 cm above the pavement. In addition, the flooring must be located no closer than 5-10 meters from the road – do not buy watermelons on the slopes, where they lie straight on the road, because through the skin soak all exhaust gases. Top watermelons must be covered by a roof, protected from direct sunlight. Ask the seller to show a license, if in doubt about the quality of the product. And never buy berries in natural markets, as in the case of a bad purchase, you will not even be able to return watermelon or attract unscrupulous trader to responsibility.
If a trade tent does not cause you to be suspicious, then you can go directly to the choice of watermelon. Inspect the berries from all sides, and never should be free of cracks, dents and dents. During transportation it is not uncommon, so be especially careful. Even through the small damage to the cork inside of the watermelon can get the chemicals, which field treated against pests. For you they are also useful and dangerous food poisoning.
Estimate the size of the berries. Watermelon grown without extra feeding and ripened in the sun, must not be too large. Excessively large berries are admired and look appetizing, but they should be alerted. Big watermelons often reached such dimensions due to the nitrates. But very small watermelons are not worth taking – they can be just immature. Choose watermelons average.
There are many ways by eye to determine the presence of nitrates in watermelon. Some experts advise to look at the green skinned brown and black dots, which indicate the presence of nitrogen salts. If you have already brought the watermelon home and cut – before eating, pay attention to the seeds. If the seeds are light, almost white, but the flesh is this deep red watermelon likely to have received a considerable amount of nitrates. An additional sign of nitrates in watermelon – if streaks in flesh thick and distinctly yellow. When natural maturation they are almost not visible, and only recharge acquire such an exaggerated view.
Another sign of apparent oversaturation nitrates watermelon – unnaturally smooth, almost glossy surface of the slice. Ideally, the cut must be like small grains – you’ll notice in the “correct” watermelon.
Finally, make sure to verify the presence or absence of nitrate, can be carried out with the watermelon a little test right at home. To do this, take a glass of water and a small piece of watermelon pulp. Put it in the water and crush there. And now look: cloudy water speaks of the natural watermelon. But if the liquid is colored and has become not just muddy, and bought a red or pink color – so this watermelon contains higher concentrations of nitrates.
Remember these simple tips and you will provide yourself and your family from the risk to eat poisoned nitrate watermelon. Because salt of nitric acid, once in the body, can cause serious consequences: disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and poisoning. Carefully choose watermelons without nitrates, but if you avoid poisoning failed – as soon as possible take the drug-sorbent and call a physician. Be healthy and enjoy a delicious and safe watermelons!

Pain after Water-Melon: Mystery solved....

Hello,
It happened to me, my wife, my Mom,my Dad, my wife's sister...
The only product to claim is "Melon".
I should say that we lived in Moldova till age of 20, than we traveled extensively, I mean myself and my wife.
Till 1990, no aches...no stomach problem with melon. From where I can draw one conclusion. As Moldova was a former USSR ( Soviet) Country and we were separated from the Entire World, there should be a chemical in Western Civilisation responsible...Well Kept Secret.
Though I heard that some imported Melons from Ukraine would give to some people exactly those symptoms...soviet doctors claimed Nitrates or Nitrites High Levels in Melon. We should check that hypothesis.
Second observation. The stomach pain was so bad in US, that I stopped eating water melon from California. The stomach pain in France was different, intensity was less, and depended on "melon". Earlier , first coming "primers" melons, especially from Spain and Italy were the worse...
Conclusion: something is about agriculture and not the Melon itself.
Last month I visited my mother in Moldova, and driving near a field of melons, I could not drive by....and stopped. I bought 5 watermelons ( 3 euros for all of them is not expensive). I was very cautious about eating them, as I practically excluded "harbuz" from my diet...
Astonished...I could exaggerate; O , Yes, I exaggerated ...No Pain...and very special... very delicious...fresh.
They had something I did not taste for awhile...
Can not explain...
But No PAIN. Doing Well....
Conclusion:
You should not test your stomach or bowels.
Check the Watermelons you consume.
Stop eating Food that gives you PAIN.

"Double blind randomised trial" with my wife confirms that we get both Pain from the same watermelon and not from the other.

The same story...lived in Guadeloupe ...no pain from their watermelons.

So, the Question is open: What is the trigger of our pain in WaterMelon?

Thank you,

Dr B

" A real man will never get enough money, women and water-melon"
Moldavian proverbial saying...to illustrate at which point you can eat Watermelon. I remember few times to vomit because of over distension of stomach, eating watermelon. Quite pleasant experience, (Romans loved it), but not painful "per se". Never could do it with something else, including alcohol. So, Watermelon should not give anybody "Pain" in the stomach...

I am searching for answers too.  I ate cantaloupe and 4 hrs later got the pain and cramps. This happens with banana, and avocado too.  I can usually eat a tablespoon of these without a problem.  A friend of mine served me vine-ripened cantaloupe from her garden.  I was afraid to eat it, but did anyway.  It was delicious and sweet, and guess what, NO PAIN.  So my thought is that it is from fruits picked TOO GREEN and left to ripen.  It seems they do not ripen properly.  It is not the fructose per say.  Don't know why others can eat them and have no problem.  All I can do is avoid them, since I cannot grow and pick them when ripe.  I sympathize with you, -the pain and frustration-.  If you find the answer, please post it.

Hi Clive.

I have the same issue as you. I'm 26 years old and after 13 years of this issue they still can't tell me what's wrong and it's been very frustrating. It started out with just grapes and bananas and has evolved to include most fruits, excluding certain types of apples, and is also quite intense with avacados, bell peppers and corn. Whether eaten fresh or prepared in a meal, they cause me great pain. It's like a massive cramping of the stomach rather than a burn, and it eventually travels down to the intestines as the dangerous food in question makes its way through the digestive system (except for peppers which tend to cause me to be sick to my stomach in addition to the intense cramping pains).

It's not acid, it's tested negative for allergies, and it's tested negative for fructose intolerance. Doctors have tentatively labelled mine a form of IBS but have told me that's not it either and that they're essentially stumped. The next step I'm to take is to get a biopsy done of my intestines to see if there's an issue there but I've yet to get it done as I'm waiting to see a specialist.

I keep reading these sites and searching the web for answers, but, like you, the most I've been able to find is a handful of people with similar symptoms, no diagnosis, and no solution.

Do you find yours is progressive and more foods are being added to the "can't eat" list? I'm worried all I'll be able to eat soon are saltines and water.

Hi Clive, I am experiencing the same problem as we speak and I am considering going to my Dr but I'm sure that they will have nothing to say other than stop eating fruit. I love fruit especially in the summer but my stomach aches are becoming to hard to deal with.

Any advice would be appreciated,

Angela

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Trouble is, that means eating no fruit at all.

Thanks for your help though.

Allergies do usually happen all of the time but IBS doesn't always happen every time.  For now, I would say eliminate the foods that have caused you problems in the past.

Hi,

Because I can eat all fruit all of the time, then one of the times (regardless of fruit (i think) and how full my stomach is) it will come on, I am unsure if IBS would be a factor. If allergy or IBS wouldn't it happen all of the time?

The symptoms of fructose intolerance seem quite close and a likely candidate; except for the honey part. Plus it still raises the question why it would only happen 1 in 8 / 1 in 10 times.

Any suggestions please..?

Clive.

Other than fructose intolerance I can't figure out what else it would be besides that some people (especially people with IBS, which you could have) can't tolerate certain foods.

Hi,

After taking a look at fructose, I see why it was suggested – especially as I have recently had a reaction from bananas but up until then, was fine with bananas even on an empty stomach. However, I have never had any problems with fruit juice (I drink a lot of orange juice) and eat more honey than I should! Especially if I get a cold – I make lemsip drinks with a very healthy dollop of honey in it – on a very empty stomach and have never had a problem.
Having said that, I do not know enough about what foods contain fructose (in a level that is likely to be significant to me) or how long after consumption a reaction is likely to occur – keeping in mind that mine starts around 3-4 hours after consumption.

Any suggestions?

Clive.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply – I will look in to fructose.

It is caused when I eat plumbs, apples, bananas, melon (not so much water melon) and grapes – it most probably happens with other fruits too but they are the only ones that I have had on their own when it has happened (rather than in a fruit salad etc).

The only potential problem I can see with it possible being fructose is that it only seems to be caused by fruit. So much so that I went for allergy testing specifically for fruit – all was clear.

Keeping this in mind, I am still open to suggestions and ideas, but will look in to fructose all the same.

Clive.
