Physical Exam - Good Doctor

I used to on the West Coast, and when I went for a physical exam the doctor always had me strip down to my underwear and sit on the exam table. All my vitals were taken by the assistant, and the doctor examined me having me remove my underwear for the genital/rectal exam. Ever since my 1st sports physical in high school, the doctor has examined my testicles. And, since I was about 22 the doctor has done a prostate exam.
Since I moved across the country I have been looking for a new doctor, and I feel concerned for my health. The doctors I've seen have examined me (if you can call it that) fully clothed. They seem overly modest, and one doctor told me that he doesn't examine the testicles unless you have symptoms. He said he doesn't check the prostate until age 52.
How can I find a doctor who will be proactive, one who isn't afraid of my body?

I would definitely tell this doctor you like your concerns. They should get a good baseline and then they will know where to go in the future. If the PSA stays down as well as no inflammation in the prostate for a number of years then they can now say that you won't get prostate cancer. So, it is good to check early on as well as for testicular cancer. That can come up at an early age. My husbands doc said he should check himself monthly. He hadn't been and fhey found a large bump in the testicles but luckily it was a spermatocele (benign).

So glad it worked out for you. I find you really have be proactive and speak up for yourself. Noone else will in the medical community. I think there is a very severe shortage of physicians but also alot are not very interested in preventive care or they don't care. I like my doctor in that he is very into preventive care. You are lucky to have found a good one.

Well, my new primary care physician is the female doctor that we've been talking about. I am very pleased. She wasn't taking new patients, but she made an exception. I think it was because I'm young and healthy. relatively speaking . : )

She is professional and thorough, and I feel like she cares about my well being. And, she is not overly modest like the male doctors I had. She does what needs to be done in a straight forward and professional manner.

That's what I wanted.

Thanks mkh9 for your good advice.

yes, I totally agree with you. I have a male doctor (family practise) that does my pelivic and breast exams. I totally trust and don't feel ackward telling him anything regarding either "female" reproductive problem. That is what they are there for. If you can find a doctor you like and can talk to it is great no matter what sex they are.  If you had a doctor male or female you can't talk to what good are they?

Thanks for the advice!
I am going to share my past experiences and my thoughts with the doctor that I liked. I'll even say what I think the exam should be like.
You have helped me to feel more confident about speaking up, and the more I've thought about this the more I think the doctor's exam should be a safe place for me to freely share my concerns. I should be able to be vulnerable with my thoughts as well as my body.
And, I think that the sex of the doctor shouldn't matter. The doctor should be able to be professional and medically focused.

Thanx. I really liked a doctor I saw when I was sick last year. But, that was the first time I've ever seen a female doctor. Very professional, knowledgable, proactive. I haven't been back since then, but I'm thinking of seeing her for my annual physical in a few weeks. Do you think it's appropriate to talk with the doctor about my concerns? (She might think I'm weird) Or, should I just see how it goes?
