As I recall a doctors office did this to me too a long time ago and it was about a year and a half later. I still don't know for sure if I didn't double pay as I couldn't find the receipt. Good luck!!

Thanks for the replies. I researched it a little bit more and think I have found the answer for future readers. The insurance company can go back anywhere from 6 months to indefinitely, depending on your state, and retract payments. Most states are 12-24 months. Like I said, I don't mind paying if I wasn't covered, I'm just unhappy that they dropped an unexpected bill on me a year later due to a mistake they made. I guess I can't get too mad since I should have been aware of my cut off date, still a year is a long time for a bill that I thought was paid to show up.
The insurance companies do all kinds of things to people and don't care about your finacial situation. They probably didn't notice it at first then came back and charged you. Maybe they will let you make payments. I fyou weren't covered at that time you have to pay.
