baby cries violently

I have a 4 mo old grandson who this evening began crying his little cry that turns serious if he's not tended to quickly.  This evening his cry turned violent and he stiffened and bent into a fetal position and appeared to stop breathing to the point of almost turning blue.  On the other end of the phone all I could think was to advise his mom to gently begin blowing into his face, lift his arm and prepare for cpr & calling 911.  He recovered quickly though. she checked for a bite by stripping him, during which he was not crying. This child has always jerked around when waking up some worse than other mostly it seems related to how hungry he may be.  I say that b/c of how he'll take his bottle.  Also it's these times he cries like he means it if he has to wait longer than he wants to.  But this episode has us worried.  Is it just temperment?  Did he lose oxygen for crying so hard?  I even wondered if he choked on saliva.   He is well tempered but also doesn't sleep alot like most babies (?) for his age during the day, only one 5 hr nap from 6p-11'ish then up every 3 hrs or less. His day naps last 5-15 min.

Hi....at this age you don't have babies crying for no reason and it sounds like he is in pain when this happens.  I wouldn't sit around guessing on this, get him to his pediatrician and go from there.

Sounds like my nephew. It could be a number of things that might be bothering him. My sister has autism and when she was little she would cry a lot too so my mom took her to the doctors and it turned out that she had problems with her ears so they had to put tubes inside them but they still hurt from time to time. I'm not sure what it is exactly but either way I do think he should be taken to a pediatrician for a checkup.
