Well, they say with surgery that the scar is actually stronger than your normal skin.  I think the best opportunity you would have to get this pinned down for sure would be to see a doctor.

it's only when i have a really hard poo when i was a kid i had bowel problems where they had to cut me to help me go. could it be when i have a hard or straining poo that it re-opens?? thanks to everyone for your help. xx

Looking back at my post, I wanted to clarify.... if you have a polyp and it isn't cancerous, the doctors still consider it pre-cancerous rather than just benign, since a polyp has the potential to change into cancer.

I would see your doctor and ask for a colonoscopy to rule out cancer and other serious problems. It may be nothing, but then again, it may be your body telling you there is definitely something going on.

Very possible this is nothing serious, like maybe you have a small hemorrhoid or a recurring fissure (if it happens with hard stool).  But, a polyp can potentially cause bleeding I believe too and they are now considered at least pre-cancerous (if not cancer) by GI doctors.  I recommend you go to a GI specialist and get it checked out.  There are very high cure rates with colon cancer when caught early, but not so great cure rates if not caught early, so best to get some screening done and get the worst ruled out!  Plus, the doctor might recommend treatment for when you are having the bleeding problem, like how to keep stool soft, etc..
