chest pain

My pain comes on suddenly and lasts sometimes days. My cardiac tests have all come back negative. Cat scan of the chest negative as well. My doctor thought it may possibly be a muscle strain. He sent me to a physical therapist which did not help. My physical therapist does not seem to think its muscular and thinks I need to address further. I've been to pain management specialists and have had nerve conduction studies. Doctors, so far, do not seem to know what could be causing my pain. Its a sharp chest pain that sometimes lasts for days and sometimes generates downward, If I press on the site  it hurts. It feels like its not my actual heart, but above layers, possibly under muscle..?  This has been going on since September 2007.

Hi Max, this sure sounds like costochondritits to me; especially since your tests have all come back normal. I would see a chiropractor for this, if a vertebrae is out of alignment in your neck and back, you will have pains. Also, if a rib head is out, you will have pains, he/she will be able to help this as well.

In the meantime, take Advil  and use heat on the area, also, take a hot bath with Epsom salt in the water, about 2 cups.

I hope this helps, please keep us posted.

I'm 17 years old and I'm I am feeling much of the same things you describe. I have many symptoms though, not just chest and rib pains. But when there is pain in my chest/ribs, it sometimes comes and goes and sometimes lasts for days. When I press down, it feels sore and tender. It sometimes moves down to my upper abdominal region as well. I haven't had every test done yet to rule out heart problems, but I think I'm experiencing anxiety pains (I hope at that's it). Anxiety pains can be sharp and in the chest/rib area. Are you stressed often? I would tell your Dr. if anxiety is a possible prob. It could also be Costochondritis, which is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum). It causes sharp pain in the costosternal joint — where your ribs and breastbone are joined by rubbery cartilage. Costochondritis is rare, but it wouldn't hurt to ask your Dr.
