In addition you should NOT take yogurt while taking an antibiotic. The calcium interferes with the action of the antibiotic, especially the class known as flouroquinilonesm (Cipro, Levaquin etc.) and the tetracyclines. After the full course of antibiotics has been taken and the infection resolved you can then eat yogurt to replenish the bacteria in the gut.

If you have a bacterial infection, antibiotics must be continued until the infection is destroyed. If you cannot tolerate erythromycin you should have been immediately switched to an alternative antibiotic.

Erythromycin is usually not tolerated well, side effects are mostly on GI system. I do not know who is using this medication now, everyone is using Clarithromycin or Azithromycin now. There is no long term side effectes, just need some time for guts to recover. Take lots of plain yogurt.
