irregular menstrual cycle

I'm 52 and thought I might be entering the stages of menopause when I recently begin to experience extremely heavy periods although I haven't started having the ususal symptons, hot flashes, night sweats, etc.  I went to my Dr. who tested my hormone levels which were all normal.  That was two months ago and I'm still having very heavy periods for weeks at the time that will stop for maybe a week or so and then begin again.  Any thoughts?

Thanks for you response, it helped a lot.  I have recently went in to my Dr. for a biopsy.  Waiting on results.

Peri-menopause can start at any age, and your symptoms sure to point to it, just because the lab work does not show it,does not mean you are not entering it. The lab work is only a picture of what is going on for that moment. Have you had the saliva test, this is very accurate and tests for all the hormones, I would certainly ask for you if you have not had one.

Endometritis can also be another cause for the heavy bleeding. Having a sonogram of the ovaries, etc, can tell if you have that. What are your thyroid levels? An over-active thyroid can cause this problem too.
