unexplained rapid weight gain

I am new to this forum so I thank any of you who take time to read and answer, or comment on my concern. I have had extreme weight gain aprox. 40 lbs over the last 8 months or less.  My diet has not changed, and I have even increased my exercise to try to stop the gain.  I have never had a weight problem before,  even weight gained during any of my four pregnancies, I was able to loose without doing any more then returning to my active busy routine.  My doctor has suggested age, hormones, and diabetes testing.  I had a thyroidectomy over 5 years ago and take a supplement for that,  closely monitered by my endocrinologist.  Are there any suggestions of a possible cause, or testing the may give or rule out a cause for this.  Thanks again topsy-turvy.

Are your periods regular?  When you miss periods, you start gaining weight.  Any chance it could be related to that?  If so, perhaps you should request an ultrasound to check your ovaries for cysts.  Take care and good luck!

Hello ,
I have read your article .I'm assuming your med are for an under active thyroid(hypo) after your thyroidectomy .I myself have been on Meds. for a year for an over active thyroid (Hyper).I myself since beginning the meds have gained weight. Have you asked your dr if it could be your meds .Also if you have not read under Mary Showman here on the internet  I'd sugget to read fom there and see if you could find some answers .I hope things get better  and that you find this information of help .May God Bless You and have a ggod day.
