Surgery for complete hamstring avulsion advised?

Hi, I totally separated my hamstring from my pelvis while water skiing 9 days ago.  Have been told by ortho surgeon on my small town (250k people) that this injury is very rare, is primarily seen in water/snow skiing injuries.  I am 52 and doc seems to think my age and lack of need to return to any level of sports means I shouldn't have surgery.  Am worried about long term pain and other issues if I dont have it surgically fixed. I would love to hear from anyone with experience/knowledge in this area. Thanks!
