There are different types of hereditary macular degeneration. As you know, macular degeneration refers to a problem with the region of the retina that controls our central vision. This area is called the macula. The main symptom is reduced visual acuity.
Some types of hereditary macular degeneration are inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. One autosomal recessive form is also known as Stargardt’s disease. For conditions that are autosomal recessive, both parents must carry a changed gene for the condition in order to have a child with the condition. Two carriers have a 25% chance of passing on this condition to each child they have.
For treatment, low vision aids have been helpful in improving vision, and low-vision specialists are available through ophthalmology centers and physician referrals. I am not familiar with the specific availability of these treatments in India, but it may help to talk with your daughter’s doctor about recommended treatments.
