FSH levels

Hi,

I am 34 years old have been trying for a baby for about a year and decided to get some blood tests done. When I went back to the gynaecologist I was told that I have a slightly high FSH level of 11.

I was on the pill, a brand called 'yasmin' for about 9 years on and off and came off last year, when i started trying for a baby. I have been taking ovulation tests that are showing I am ovulating but my periods are very light only lasting 3 days at most although I think I have had light periods all my life.

I am really worried that I may not be able to conceive and that the cut off in the uk for ivf treatment is an FSH level of 10. Please could you give me some advice as to the best course of action ( I am now waiting for an ultrasound and repeat blood tests). Is there anything I can do to help? Online they mention DHEA treatment - I am sure what this is also can you advise any supplements to lower my FSH levels?

Many thanks in advance

Hannah

Hi!
I want to correct my earlier comment to you.  I have done some further research and about 1/3 of fertility clinics are using DHEA to help with all stages of IVF.  DHEA apparently CAN lower your FSH and might be a good option for you.  Hope this is more helpful than my earlier reply!
Good luck!

Hi!
Unfortunately, there are no supplements that will reliably lower your FSH. Even if the supplements DO lower your FSH the IVF doctors usually "count" the highest FSH you have had.  A high FSH is a sign of poor ovarian reserve (meaning that you don't have a lot of follicles left in your ovaries). The ultrasound will probably confirm this although maybe not.
Once your FSH has become elevated it means that you will not respond to the medications that the IVF doctors use to superovulate their patients.  (that means that they purposefully cause the patient to produce lots of mature eggs for fertilization in the hopes of creating lots of embryos).
An FSH level of 11 does not mean that you won't get pregnant on  your own though.  You stil have a decent chance so keep trying!  You might consider donor eggs or adoption.  Donor eggs are great!
Good luck!
