GYN exam for virgins

Hi,

I'm 22 and still a virgin but I was wondering if I should get started even though with my yearly GYN exams ? Do they perform GYN exams on virgins too ?

Will it hurt ? Will they take a smaller speculum ?

I also find it very embarassing that I'm a virgin still at this age. If I don't tell the GYN, can they find out ?

Have you seen lots of other women my age who are also virgins ?

Do the speculum size has something to do with whether or not the girls is a virgin or with how big your vaginal entrance is ?

What can you find out by performing a GYN exam only, not a pap smear ?

HI!
If you are a virgin, you are not at risk for abnormal paps as they are caused by HPV which is an STD.  So, if you came to see me and were having no problems, I would very likely skip the pap smear.  A pelvic exam can be done on a virgin.  We do have tiny speculums.  The seem to usually hurt, no matter how hard I try!

According to ACOG guidelines, you should start exams at 21 or within 3 years after first intercourse.

Hope this helps!
