Ovarian Cyst and Kidney Stones

My 15 year old daughter had a CT scan to check for kidney stones.  The doctor told me the results showed stones in both kidneys...more in the right than in the left.  Also showed a 4cm by 4cm cyst on the right ovary. She put her on birth control pills for a couple of cycles to see if the cyst goes away.    So we are starting month 1 with the birth control pills, and waiting for an ultrasound in a month or two. As for the kidney stones...she was told to drink lot's of water, as much as 2 -2 liter bottles a day.  She began drinking the water and in about a week she passed a substance that resembled sand.  She had no pain when this happened.  I reported this to the doctor, who said yes..she had just passed the kidney stones.  She was at school when she passed those and didn't have anything to use to collect the substance.  So we have nothing to take in for testing.  Do you agree that it was kidney stones?  And that we are doing the right thing with the cyst..taking the wait and see approach?

My insides were stuck together. and the iud merania place in because my estrogen levels were high. I've had it now for 2 yrs. The past year I have been having a discharge that is pinkish and have been tested a ton for stew because I thought I man have gotten some from my sons father. Nothing. A month ago I went to the hospital because I believed my iud shifted. They said no but I had a fibroid tumor. Now I have had more pain. My uterus is swollen and my lymph node on the right side of my neck is to. I went to the hospital they said I don't have and infections and they did a CT scan on my abdomen and seen I have adnexal lesions low density on left and right side. Both approximately 3cm. The iud is suppose to help with my estrogeeso this wouldn't be happening. I am concerned because my mother told me she had pre ovarian cancer but she's not alive. I have a ton of pain and have an appointment to see someone in a couple weeks. My concern is that even the doc in the er said maybe its best if I did have a hysterectomy. She asked me repeatedly r u sure ur going to go to ur doctor appointment and made me promise I would. Im a little scared... I have no head symptoms no sore throat either to cause my lymph node to be swollen. Could it be cause by what's happening to me with my reproductive system? Do u think its serious... help

Hi, Last week I began feeling pain in my back on the right side and in the abdomin.  I called my dr and went to see her on Tuesday.  A vaginal ultrasound was done which revealed a 6+ cm cyst on my right ovary.  She gave me two options.  Surgery or wait and see.  She said if it wasn't causing me much pain (she seemed surprised it wasn't) then to wait 6wks and rescan.  She said most likely it would rupture especially during intercourse and said it would hurt very badly when it did.  This scared me so I called her back and scheduled surgery.  She said she may have to make an bikini incision and may even have to remove my ovary.  The surgery is scheduled for 11/30.  Is it most likely this will rupture before then?  As of right now I am hurting a little more than usual.  Should I be concerned of this?  Could this be growing again or rupturing?  She did not tell me what kind of cyst it was.  She just seemed suprised I wasn't doubling over in pain.  Will a cyst of this size cause her to have to remove my ovary?  Does the size of the cyst cause the risk of an bikini incision?  Thank you, Almekay

Hi There I had an abdominal ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound yesterday on 11/19/2007 at 1415p.m. my sx were RLQ pain and lower back pain,now I really never get sick or c/o of pain but on Friday 11/16/2007 the pain had gotten so bad that I called my pcp and made an appt. for later that afternoon. When my doctor examined me he noticed that I was having atot pain and discompfort, so he suggested that I go a get an abdominal u/s, but I waited until I Monday the 19th the following Monday. Here are my findings:The right ovary is enlarged and measures 5.8x4.4x4.4cm for total of 55.8ml and it contain a hypoechoic solid mass lesion which measures 4.6x4.2cm.  The right ovary arterial and venous flow are indentified and ovarian torsion is less likely.  No free fluid.

1. 4.6x4.2cm hypoechoic sold lesion in the right ovary most likely represents a solid ovarian tumor.  The right ovary arterial  and venous flow are identified and ovarian torsion is less likely.

My question to you Dr. Downing is when should I do my testing to find out if the tumor is cancer or not if the pain does not got what should be my next move. I'm a 44yr. old female who is status post hysterrectomy July 10.2006 due abnormal heavy menses but my ovaries were left because they were healthy and I did not not need BSO. Thanks for the update.  My daughter had her ultra-sound last Monday and her cyst has resolved.  I'm sorry to hear that you are still having problems with yours.  It is very stressful and hard to wait for tests and then for results.  Please give us an update when you find out your results from the MRI.  I had a 6cm complex cyst with septations and had it removed about 4 years ago.  It was an endometrioma due to endometriosis.  I'm really hoping my daughter will not have endo.  Hopefully the MRI will give your doctor a better picture of what is going on.  Please let us know how it goes.  Thanks!

I had a pelvic ultrasound done 10-5 -07 it showed a 3.3x2.4x3.7cm which showed a complex mass measuring 1.8 cmx1.5 cmx1.8cm. It states that it represented a complex cystic structure with hemorrhage and debris. So I was sent for ca-125 test which was 9.9. She wants to do a follow up in 2 cycles.. However since I had the test done I now have pain.. ( No complaint of pain before) Its uncomfortable sit cross my legs or put on anything around my waist with it not being extremely uncomfortable.( In law enforcement have to put on belt weighing 25kg). Although they say my test was ok.. Should I attempt to reach out to my doctor and let her know that I am now am experiencing these new symptoms with no swelling( thats why I went to see her in the first place). I am 34 y/0  bf with no family hx of breast Ca or OV ca. ? OR Should I wait to for my follow up ultrasound...

Hey thanks the guy that was doing the ultrasound said that it is deffently not normal for a young women my age to have a cyst that big on my ovary and that. He said he will notify my doctor and tell him that he should operate and take the cyst out just in case.

I think it's normal for them to look at the organs around the cyst.  A cyst that is 13cm is quite large and could be pressing on other organs.  Sometimes they will press on the bladder and cause frequent urination..always make you feel like your bladder is full and that you always need to empty it.  Even if it's not full.  I'm sure he just wanted to get an idea, and do everything possible during the test..so the doctor will have a clear picture of where and what exactly the cyst is touching.  Do let me know what you find out.  Best wishes.

hello everyone,
my name is shy and I am 17 years old and just found out that I have a septated cyst that is 13cm. I found out about my cyst two weeks ago and my doctor told me then that it was 11cm two months ago. My doctor told me that I should be looking at surgery if it does not shrink. should I be worried as well because the guy that did my ultrasound was also spending a lot of time looking at my organs all the way around the cyst is this normal for someone that is looking at it to do that when they are that big?

Your experience sounds like one that needs to be shared, so that people can be aware of all the things that can happen if left untreated.  And even with treatment, there are still so many complications in a situation like yours.  Thanks for telling me your story.

I don't mind the questions at all.  After the stone was found on CT in Nov. 2004, they attempted a lithotripsy (Dec. 2004), which a later doc told me shouldn't have been done. It was useless, they didn't place a stent, and it had no effect on the stone (which was a whopper, 4 cm or larger, multiple branches).  A month later (Jan. 2005) the urologist did a surgery to remove the stone through my back (keyhole surgery), because to leave it as it was would have led to destruction to the kidney.  I can't go into all the details, but there was believed to have been a procedural error during the surgery and the upper pole of the kidney scarred down, and the doc missed the stenotic condition despite 4 separate diagnostic tests post-surgery showing the scarring.  I got a second opinion (Dec. 2005) and that doc lasered open the tight, scarred area, but it was not successful and it scarred tight again.  I was referred to a teaching hospital 2 hours from my home, and we spent Feb-Aug 2006 trying to save the kidney without success, and ultimately both the upper and lower poles shut down. So the kidney came out...but they didn't note the cysts on my ovaries (showing on the CT's) until I asked about them...this resulted in a supracervical hyst/bso 2 months later (but no treatment of the endo).  Now I'm treating w/an endo expert, and she is looking at the "big picture", both my urological and gynecological issues. I know that this is a LOT of information, but again, I want my experience to help someone from going through what I have been through.

I would like to ask a few questions if you don't mind.  When they found the staghorn in your kidney, what was the treatment?  Why did it get so bad that your kidney had to be removed? I guess my question is what happened from age 43 to 45 as far as treating the condition when they found the staghorn?  Thanks so much for your comments...they are very helpful!

Hello again...I've never posted on these boards, ever, but felt compelled to do so given the similarities to the two conditions I'm dealing with.  I am 46 now, but was 43 when the staghorn was found, and 45 when my kidney was removed 9/15/06, and supracerv hyst/bso 11/15/06.  The endo was missed my entire life...so your daughter will be fortunate to have docs evaluating her with that in mind.  I've read that women go an average of 7-8 years before they get a proper endo diagnosis.  Please, please, if there is anything I can do to help just let me know.  I would be grateful to know that my circumstances might help someone else.

Thank you so much for your comment.  I also had stage 4 endo...and have worried that my daughter will also have endo.  What age are you?  My stage 4 was found during surgery at age 40.  I'm hoping if she has endo they will find it a lot earlier than they did mine.  Thank you for your comments.

Please make sure that your daughter's doctors are evaluating her two conditions together.  I too had a staghorn stone, and those are not to be taken lightly.  They will increase and attempt to fill the interior of the kidney.  I too had bilateral adnexal masses, but the docs were so focused on the kidney that they missed the issue with the ovaries.  Turns out I had undiagnosed stage 4 endometriosis, and I am now under the care of an endometriosis expert hours from my home to correct the situation and she is looking at the whole situation in my abdomen/pelvis. I am not telling you any of this to scare you, simply to urge you to have very skilled docs working with you who are treating both conditions.  Perhaps consider a urogynecologist consult as well.

I can speak to the management of the ovarian cyst.  You didn't give a description of the cyst beyond its size, however, common things being common it is quite likely your daughter has what is considered a functional cyst (i.e., a physiologic cyst that forms due to the ovarian response to its hormonal environment), or a corpus luteum cyst (i.e., the normal cyst that forms after ovulation).  A functional cyst will appear simple on u/s, while a corpus luteum will appear complex.  

A corpus luteum will resolve spontaneously as a normal process of the menstrual cycle.  A functional cyst may resolve, but also could persist or enlarge, ultimately requiring surgical resection (best performed by laparoscopic cystectomy).

Commonly, oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) are prescribed with the idea of suppressing new functional cysts from forming.  However, most modern low dose OCPs appear to have minimal efficacy in preventing the development of functional cysts.  The plan to repeat an u/s in 3 months is appropriate.  If your daughter has a regular period, best to have the study performed shortly after the onset of her menses.

Lastly, ovarian cysts on occasion may bleed into themselves, rupture, or cause the ovary to torse (or twist).  Your daughter should be wary of any sudden onset abdominal pain and/or nausea.  If this were to happen she should seek medical attention immediately.

CT Results are as follows:  1) Probable bilateral developing staghorn renal calculi, slightly more prominetntly on the right than the left but witout evidence for obstructive uropathy on the current study. 2) Probable benign simple renal cortical cyst, midpole left kidney medially measuring no greater than 8.0 mm and is considered an incidental finding. 3) No additional significant CT abdomen abnormality. 4) Large 4.3 x 4.0 cm low density right posterolateral adnexal mass most likely represents a benign follicular cyst;  follow-up characterization with sonography versus follow-up sonogram in 4-6 weeks to ensure resolution may be of benefit for further evaluation if felt to be clinically indicated. 5) Increased thickness of the endometrum measuring 16.0 mm, most likely which is physiologic in nature ( she did start her period 3 days later) follow-up characterization with ultrasound may be of benefit if felt to be clinically indicated. 6) No additional significant CT pelvic abnormality; specifically, no evidence for appendicitis.

i have a cyst on my right ovary as well...the doctor back in april told me to do the "wait and see" approach and i have been doing that

i'm heading back to the doctor today to see if my cyst has gone away...

ill update you on this but bear in mind im 28 years old and TTC and im blaming this cyst for my problems not being able to

i have also heard in many cases and read a lot online that ovarian cysts are common for females and most of the time they burst and go away without knowing...there's a small time they linger and that's when you should be concerned....
