Help miserable..I've had every test done!!!

Hello,

I'm 28 weeks pregnant. At 3 months pregnant, after intercourse, the next day I had intense vaginal burning and soreness. I went to my obgyn and was diagnosed with bacterial vaginitis and a UTI. The problem is since I have been treated for that the symptoms have never gone away. I have been tested at least  4 times in the last four months- negative for trichmoniases, gonherrea, chlymadia, HIV and have no obvious signs of Herpes and also tested negative yesterday with a Herpes antibody test. I also don't have a yeast infection, although my doctor often says it looks like yeast but when it is cultured it comes back negative.

I have vaginal soreness, inflammation and burning with urination. It seems to be not coming from the urethra but the burning seems to be more on the vaginal tissue. I can see the redness. My doctor says that in the absence of infection that it is likely just hormonal and I have to deal with it. I have never been so miserable in my life nor have I ever had this kind of a problem before. I've tried hydrocortisone cream, aloe vera gel, lidocaine and often I am in tears from the inflammation and burning. The soreness has moved it used to be further back in my vagina and now it burns closer to the vaginal opening.

Are there any medical explantions for what is happening with me???? Is it possible that I do in fact have some sort of infection that isn't for some reason showing up in the vaginal culture????
Thanks in Advance.

I am not pregnant, but I have all of those symptoms. You can read my story under my name because it's quite long. I get told the same thing as to "it happens" or nothing can be done...i'm so sick and tired of hearing that, because its NOT at all normal and i KNOW something has to be wrong. It's ruining my realtionship with my fiance because it seems there is always something wrong with my vagina area and majority of the time its extremely painful. I plan on switching doctors. I currently have seen all 5 drs. in the same OB/GYN office that i currently go to and i'm not getting anywhere. Please let me know what your dr. says and if anything helps in anyway. At this point I"M BEGGING FOR A TREATMENT. How the Amoxil helped a lot?????

I am 33 weeks pregnant now, and have similar symptoms that have been ongoing for almost three months now.  All STD tests came back negative just as yours did,as well as any present yeast, and my symptoms started soon after a sexual experience as well.  I am now being treated by an incredible doctor after leaving my last OBG group when told that there was "nothing wrong".  I had intense burning, to the point of bringing me to tears, and swelling and definent redness.  I was diagnosed with vulvodynia and vulvar vestibulitis.  YES!  It is absolutely possible to develop this during pregnancy.  Please don't believe that nothing can be done!  I am still in alot of pain, but undergoing different treatments and seeing a physical therapist as well for the condition.  If you would like to talk more, you can certainly message me.  You are not alone!

I have the same exact problem, except I'm not pregnant.  My doctor (not my ob/gyn) said I have severe vaginal dryness (whatever that's supposed to mean).  I also noticed that I'm breaking out a little bit where I shave.  So, I think it's an infection of some type.  I've been taking amoxil for the infection and I am feeling TONS better (this is day 3).  I've been careful to keep taking my antibiotics, bathing the area gently w/my usual shower gel, and wiping any dots I see with an alcohol-dipped cottonball.  I'm also putting a little hydrocortisone cream on...but you can only use that for a couple of days because it's not entirely good for you.
The other thing is that now that I'm not in such severe pain, I'm using premarin vaginal cream for the dryness.  It really, really is making a difference.  I believe that you're able to use it while pregnant, but there are other things you can use for dryness that don't contain hormones...like Replens.
I know the pain your in, and how confused you are because I'm going through it myself.  Don't feel bad.  There are things that you can do to feel better even if they don't know what's wrong or why.
Good luck :)

Thanks for you response. I have seen two other obgyn's and both of them also think that possibly this is all hormonal. I have been researching vulvadynia. Is vulvadynia common in pregnancy???? Would a biopsy for the vaginal tissue be benefical?????

Thanks.

Hello,

You may want to consider a second opinion.  Obviously you've been worked up for the most common causes of vaginitis and it is unclear why you are still symptomatic.  My best recommendation is to get other opinions.  Consider another ob/gyn or a dermatologist.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
