Trying not to freak out!

About a week ago, I developed a painful spot on the right side next to my vagina, on the labia tip.  Then I developed a horrible pain near my clitoris.  After a self-check, I found white sores that have since spread out in the surrounding area.  They are flat, with no pus in them that I can tell.  In fact they resemble the sores I get in my mouth when I get an infected cut, flat and white, with no pus.  It's very irritating, painful and itchy.  I also have a whitish-grey discharge that doesn't have a scent like yeast.  I'm pretty sure it's some form of vaginitis, but I don't understand the sores.  Any help would be much appreciated.  I'm going in for herpes testing, and I am also five months pregnant.  I have been in a monogamous relationship for 6 months now and he has had no signs of any STDs or cold sores or anything like that.  Just looking to get a handle on what the possible culprit could be, since herpes would be a devastating thing.

Hello,

What you describe sounds like a herpes (HSV II) outbreak.  Herpes can be transmitted from one person to another without any active lesions (or sores).  There is no cure to Herpes, but it can be managed successfully.

You should make your ob/gyn aware of this.  If indeed this is Herpes, given you are pregnant, to prevent passing it on to your newborn at the time of birth your physician will want to make sure you have no active lesions and should initiate suppression (with Valtrex or Acyclovir) around 36 weeks gestation.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
