There are alternatives. Ask the doctor if you would be eligible to have a laser procedure, which lessens the risk of reproductive problems in the future. If you can, then search around your area for a doctor who does laser procedure. To prevent the CIN from getting worse or coming back, try to eat plenty of fruits and veggies, also take 400 mg DIM supplement daily, plus 6,000 mg vitamin C, 150,000 IU Beta Carotene, and 10 milligrams (not micrograms) folic acid. Also, do not smoke, and from my experience, do not use any hormonal birth control! Always always use barrier methods (I use condoms plus diaphragm) to lessen your exposure. I would also get in touch with a naturopath who can give you suppositories to help fight off the effects of the HPV. Check out Tori Hudson's "Women's Encyclopedia" for your condition. Good luck.
Hi!
I'm sorry to say that your post title is accurate. I don't mean to be quite as gloomy as I sound though. Most LEEP procedures are done for High Grade dysplasia or dysplasia within the canal of the cervix. If you are under 30, or if you haven't had children yet, be certain to ask your doctor about all of the alternatives before having a second procedure though.
Abnormal cells in the cervix are caused by the HPV virus, which is a condition that we can't cure, we can only treat. If left untreated, the abnormalities caused by this virus can lead to cancer of the cervix over a long span of time. If treated and managed appropriately, no woman should ever get cervical cancer any more--that's the good news.
If you were my patient, I would only consider a repeat LEEP procedure if you had a high grade (CIN 3 or CIS) lesion on your biopsies/pap OR if there were abnormal endocervical cells suggesting that the problem is deep within the cervix. Otherwise, I would probably opt for another alternative such as cryotherapy which will not remove more of your cervix--leaving you at risk for preterm labor/delivery.
I hope this gives you a start at understanding this process. Yes, it DOES come back again, unfortunately.
Good luck!
