Hello,

Birth control pills are helping in patients with PCOS in multiple ways.  One, they regulate the menstrual cycle, protect the endometrium (inside lining of the uterus) from overgrowth due not ovulating, and two they decrease the amount of androgens (testosterone like hormones) in the blood minimizing common symptoms of PCOS including acne, male pattern hair growth, and hair thickening.

In the future conceiving may be complicated by irregular ovulation (ovulation is the time of the menstrual cycle when a cyst on the ovary releases an egg to be fertilized by sperm).  Some women with PCOS conceive spontaneously, others need fertility medication or other assistance to achieve conception.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
