Period Problems.

I started my period around age 13, They weren't very regular but I still had them. After about a year I stopped getting them. For the past 2 years I've had maybe 5-6 of them. I go months and months without a period, but when I get them they usually last about 2 weeks heavy bleeding or 1-2 days light spotting. I went nearly a year without one then bled heavily for around 3 weeks. That was by far my worst period, I always get back pain and abdominal cramps with them, lucky me. Lately I've noticed vaginal discharge, itching, and an odor, no matter how well I wash. It's rather embarrassing and I'm not quite sure what to do. I went to my doctors a few months ago and they gave me my first pap smear, they said there was nothing out of the ordinary, but I had originally went there for my kidneys so she wasn't really checking for anything. I've been trying to get in to see another doctor but it's difficult for me to get there and to talk to my mother about it. I know it's not an STD, I've been with only guy and I've been with him for the past 10 months, he's only had 2 other partners and I made sure to have him tested for STDs  before we ever did anything sexually and he was clean. It also is tender and sore during/after intercourse, it can be really painful sometimes to the point where I don't even want to be touched. So I'm not sure what it could be, and I would really appreciate some advice and insight.

Ah, I take metformin too, for my diabetes, So I just go to the doctors and tell them my symptoms?
Hopefully I can get in sometime this month or next month. I have super bad anxiety, especially about the doctors.
But thank you so much for all your help

Hi!
A couple of different things going on here.  Number one, you almost certainly have PCOS.  And you really should see a doctor for that.  It is important to have at least 4 periods per year to keep your uterus healthy.  Fewer than that can lead to endometrial cancer ( cancer of the lining ). Some people take progesterone.  Some people take birth control pills.  Some people take Metformin.  It depends on your preferences and your goals with regards to pregnancy.

Number two--it sounds like you have a yeast infection.  You can get a pH test kit at the drug store and use as directed to find out.  If its just yeast, you can use one of the over the counter remedies like Gynelotrimen.  If that doesn't work, or if your symptoms get worse, you definitely need to get checked.  No need to be embarrased to talk to the doc about any or all of this stuff.  You can safely talk to mom about a yeast infection too, as nuns can get those too.

Hope this information is useful to you!
