different sized ovaries

I have been experiencing pelvic pain, especially on the left side radiating to my lower back.  I have been experiencing irregular periods and had recent weight gain without diet or exercise changes. I have experienced headaches and nausea w/o vomiting.  My PCP ordered a pelvic u/s and the reading was normal.  Uterus 7.1 x 3.9 x 6.2 cm and is anteverted.  Endometrium 6 mm. Right ovary volume 7 cc and Left ovary volume 12 cc. No adnexal mass or fluid collections.  My question is it normal for one ovary to be so much larger than the other?

Hi!
If you were my patient, I would advise you that your ultrasound sounds quite normal.  It IS common for the ovaries to be different sizes--often one ovary will contain one or more follicular (physiologic or normal) cysts which will add to the measured volume.  Your scan does not rule out endometriosis which is something that could be causing your symptoms, and you may wish to discuss the possibility of a laparoscopy with your doctor .
Good luck!
