I have been in this relationship for the last 10 years, since I was 18. I think I'm too old for the vaccine according to the program in my country. My gyno also told me it's unlikely for me to have HPV (we discussed it because of some minor changes in the Pap smear, while all other cervical smears showed no cause for it), but I don't understand why is it unlikely but not impossible.

If you are in a mutually monogamous relationship it is highly unlikely that you would contract HPV. You can reduce your risk even further by getting the HPV vaccine. I would strongly recommend getting the vaccine, because even if you and he both wait until marriage, and then are faithful as long as you are married, you just never know what the future will bring--and many people re-marry in this day and age.
To explain a little further, the virus is sexually transmitted in the vast majority of cases, so if you and he are both negative, and neither of you is ever exposed to anyone else, your risk of contracting the virus should be close to zero.
