HIV RNA

Hay Doc,

I hope you remember me from a week ago. I had my an std test done that came back fully negative after 7 days. I was still worried about HIV because I was told that the antibodies take longer to show up. I told my GP, about my anxiety issues, so he ordered an RNA test for me. I took that at 14 days (negative). Is this considered to be conclusive? Please reply soon,

thank you

Thank you very much doctor. My test came back negative but my GP does not think i need any more testing. I will take another test at 28 days even tho my GP doesn't think i should. your advice has carried me through my anxiety's, it means a lot.

Hi there,
Sorry it has taken a couple of days to reply.  In my experience, a negative HIV RNA by PCR test after 7-10 days from original exposure is highly sensitive, very reliable and extremely reassuring.  However it is not fully conclusive and I would always recommend a HIV Duo test after 28 days as the final and fully conclusive test.
Best wishes,
Dr Jose
