Testing

Hi,

Just had a quick question, what would you think about a negative DUO test (also called fourth generation I believe) at 3 months post exposure? I did take PEP.

Thank you kindly.

Great, thanks, I thought the guidelines were for 4th gen 3 months (12 weeks) after the pep thus the 4 months from time of exposure? And I know those add guidelines but I've read thru posts and it's Seems that these 4th gens would pick up on the infection sooner than that? What's the actual probability that the test result would change at 3 month after finishing PEP or 4 months after finishing PEP? Thanks!

Good Morning and thanks for the post,

The "window period" will run from dates of exposure so theoretically from the date of the second exposure the clock starts ticking.

You haven't specified the exposure/s so the actual risk is not quantified for either.

A DUO - 4th generation test - will give a probably reliable result at 3 months post event in ordinary circumstances. Taking PEP changes the circumstances although we think that a DUO will yield a similarly accurate result at 3 months.

The UK guidelines for PEP say that you should take a test - 4th generation is standard in the UK - at 3 months after PEP - not after exposure but after PEP.

There is evidence that taking some types of antiretroviral medicines - HIV meds - will work as a protecton against getting new HIV infection. So it is likely that if you did not pick up HIV on the first occasion then it will have hopefully been averted on the second occasion.

The certain answer to your question will be to do a 4th generation HIV test at 4 months after finishing PEP.

best wishes, Sean

Also, just wanted to add this:  I had a second possible exposure halfway thru my PEP, I completed my PEP and I assume the testing guidelines remain the same in this stuation...or could this have extened window period.  THanks...
