help! unprotected sex with Vietnamese prostiture

Please help, I am extremely anxious. I had unprtected sex with a Vietnamese prostitute 7 weeks ago. A week and a half ago I developed symptoms of what I think is acute HIV infection. First I got a cough and ulcers on my tounge. I was not really worried about these as I was on vacation in Japan and was staying out late and drinking and smoking (I don't usually smoke) every night, so I thought it was due to this. However 3 days ago I noticed a rash which is most pronounced on my stomach, chest, back and upper thighs, but is also on my neck, arms and lower legs. It looks like lots and lots of small red pimples. Also, I still have a cough and ulcers on my tounge. I think my rash could be acute HIV rash. So basically I am really scared that I have HIV. I have booked myslef an appointment at a clinic to get a test, but I am not sure I really want to find out because it will destroy my life as well as my parents lives....

Hi, thanks for your answer.

In the end it took a 4th generation duo ELISA test, which was negative. That test, then, was taken over 7 weeks since the 'episode' with a prostitute and over 5 weeks since a seperate low risk contact.

So if I could just ask a final question, would you say that my results are conclusive and I can stop worrying?

Hello

I think it likely that the HIV test you have had is very probably accurate.

Most people will form antibodies by the 6 th week post exposure and if the symptoms you describe are due to HIV then it is probable that you do have antibodies.

Obviously although you are worried about the episode it again is most likely that the lady you had sex with is probably HIV negative. Even if she was HIV positive then the average chance of acquiring HIV on a single occasion would be of the order of 1 in 1200 or so.

Best wishes, Sean

Dr.

An update: I had an HIV ELISA test, the full name of the test was Immunochromatographic assay rapid test, and got the results half and hour later, they were negative. However I live in South Korea and I am not sure how trustworthy the results. Would the test not show up negative anyway if I am going through the symptoms of acute HIV infection?

So basically I am trying to decide whether to go back to the UK to get tested there, because I am still very anxious and I am living in a country with an unfamiliar medical system
