Glad I could help. Take care.EWH
Thank you so much doctor, I will put this silly worry behind me and move forward, I guess I just needed an expert's opinion and judgment on this because reading things online can be confusing and taken out of context. I read through some of your other responses to people and I just want to say I hope you know how helpful you are to people in providing detailed, concise responses and educating people/lessening anxiety with your expert and honest knowledge. I hope you have a great week! Thanks again.
Yes even if it were someones elses blood (not a realistic concern however), you would not be at risk. EWH
Thanks so much for that quick and helpful response. Just one more question to clear my anxiety...if for some reason it was someone else's blood that had HIV would I be safe anyways even though I cut myself with it? Like would the virus likely have died at that point on the shard of glass because it had been exposed to the air for atleast 10-20 minutes? Sorry for the final question I just have bad anxiety and would like to completely put this worry out of my mind and I trust your response.
Welcome to the Forum. I would disagree with the information you got from the web site regarding broken glass. Broken glass and used needles are two entirely different things and have different risks associated with them. The problem with used needles is that blood can be in the hollow portion of a needle, protected from the environment and therefore allowing the virus to live longer until it punctures deep into tissue to cause infection.
In the other hand, glass fragments are solid. As a result there is no protected site for blood to be sheltered from the environment. As a result the virus dies quickly in the environment. Further, in the situation you describe, the blood you describe is likely yours. Sometimes bleeding takes a little while to start, in part because the glass blocks the bleeding and in part because it takes a while for the bleeding to start.
Bottom line, there really is not reason for you to worry about this. No need for worry, no need for testing. I hope your finger feels better. EWH
