Please I need some advice, I had a low risk exposure (suture needlestick) 10wks ago and commenced PEP within the first hour and completed 1 month. A 6wk post PEP(10wks post exposure) came negative. Please what chances do I have when test again at 12wks post PEP?
"That will be all for this thread" and "I can't do more than I have" meant what it said. Read my original reply and concentrate on it. If you cannot get beyond your unwarranted fears, you should talk to your primary care provider about it, with the expectation that professional mental health care may be in order. It is not normal to be so fixated on HVI fear despite such powerful evidence and strong reassurance you are not infected. I suggest it out of compassion, not criticism.
And do not start a new thread with the same questions. If you do, it will be deleted without reply (and without refund of the posting fee).
I am sorry for adding the additional information. I became a vegetarain after 6 weeks of exposure, does this will influence my test resutl? thank you.
Dear doctor:
I am very appreciate your knindly answers, thanks a lot, I promise it is my last question.
Just got the the test result, 13 weeks (95 days)after exposure, I got the the ELISA test result: negative, I am really want to move on, if you can give me conclusive resut. Would you please evaluate my risk situcation in consideration of my first resut of "not sure, there is band P24, exposure behaviour, and taken two pills of Lamivudine after exposure in four weeks, (65days) after taken the pills, Does I need the new test? I have check the 13 weeks test after exposure, there is one senorio, I went to hospital to check Chlamydia 13.5 weeks ater exposure, the doctor use a stick with a cotton cap pick into my urethra. I feel so pain at that time. After I came back I found it became worse when I pee. I can remember that there were a lot of HIV infected patient to do regular check. They were just finished after I came into the doctor’s room. I am sure my urethra is heavy hurt by the stick which the doctor take test with it. So worried, The question is if there were some virus on cotton, does it will absolutely infect me? Please note: the stick had been penetrated into my urethra. I can still remember the doctor use his glove peel my foreskin. The glove I am sure is not new one, he did not change the glove after check the previous patient, which one is infected patient. Maybe the interval time is just 2 minutes. I checked my penis, there is one small scar there. The second question is does it will be infectious if the doctor use his contaminated glove to peel my foreskin?
Pleae evaluate the above my question and give me the defninite ansewerss, I am so sorry for the above question since there is only one expert I can request help for, thanks a lot.
Acute HIV symptoms, including fever, occur 10-20 days after exposure. Nine weeks is too late.
"Can you evaluate whether two dose lamivudine after four weeks exposure will prolong the seroconversion till the nine weeks?" I already answered that as best I can. Did you think I might have changed my mind?
As for "I really need your help", I have done the best I can. No online service can provide definitive answers. The odds are strongly in your favor. As I said above, I doubt 2 doses of lamivudine makes any difference in HIV test reliability.
That will be all for this thread. I can't do more than I have.
Thank you for your answers, Doctor, Handsfield,
There are just two question I need you to clarify:
Do you really believe that a fever is HIV cause after nine weeks exposure? I searched this forum, you usually believe that the seroconversion will be done after six weeks, Can you evaluate whether two dose lamivudine after four weeks exposure will prolong the seroconversion till the nine weeks?
The organisation I did the test is not a personal health care provider, but a famouse hospital in China. They can not give me the suggestion, that is the reasaon why I ask the help from you. I really do not know how long the test I need to take again, Please give me some advices, considering the two dose of lamivudine's effect.
My additional information is the intercourse with condom, the girl is a chinese girl. I can not reassure after reading your suggestion, and I am begining to suspect this nine weeks test result now. Thanks, I think my whole question is just arounding the effect of two dose of lamivudine. I really need your help, thanks a lot.
Welcome to the forum. I'll try to help.
You had a very low risk exposure. Assuming you are in the US or other industrialized country, it is very unlikely your female partner had HIV, probably less than 1 chance in 1,000. And even if she had it, HIV is not transmitted by hand-genital contact or fingering, even with cuts on the finger.
It was a mistake to take lamivudine, an anti-HIV drug; and if it was going to be taken at all, it should have been a full, standard dose as normally done for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), usually for a few weeks. When taken that way, PEP is believed to carry a possibilty of prolonging the window period. Even this isn't proved; there has been no reported research on it. To your specific questions:
1-3) These all ask the same question with different words. My guess is that there is no effect from taking just 2 doses of the drug. Since you were exceedingly unlikely to be infected anyway, I cannot imagine you have HIV or could transmit it. (If I were in your situation, knowing what I know, I would never have stopped having unprotected sex with my wife, with no fears for her health.)
4) If you really have fever (a measured temperature over 100F), then I doubt HIV is the cause.
6) Probably 6-8 weeks is sufficient, as for anyone testing for HIV. Three months is old news; with standard tests in current use, the window period is almost never that long.
Presumably your testing is being managed by a personal health care provider. Follow that person's advice about whether any additional testing is needed. Most likely not. In the meantime, don't let this bother you so much. You really were not at risk.
