General Risk Assessment

Hello, doctor.

First, thank you for providing answers to HIV related questions at such a low cost on a public forum. My question is a simple one, and I'll get right to it:

I'm a young gay male. I get tested for HIV and other STDs about once per year, and I don't engage in anal sex. It's been about a year since my last test, so I'm going to go next week. I'd like to know what results I can expect.

Over the last year, I've met maybe five or six guys on Craigslist or Adam4Adam and sucked them off one or two times each. I understand that Internet hookups are risky in general, but there aren't that many fish in the sea around here and I get lonely. I try to mitigate the risk as much as possible. For instance, I've only met with guys who believe that they are HIV negative and I particularly avoid anyone who admits to barebacking. I never let a man ejaculate in my mouth, but some of the encounters were pretty rough; some insecure "straight" men get a kick out of that, I think.

I know that the risk for giving blow jobs is fairly low, but with anywhere from five to ten encounters, I'm a little anxious about my test results, perhaps unwarrantably. I'd appreciate your input. What do you anticipate?

I would not worry about the exposures you describe.  If your only activity is oral sex you should not be at risk.  Asking partners, while not perfect is a good idea an will reduce your risk somewhat.  As for oral sex, the quoted figure for HIV risk, if one has oral sex with an infected partner is less than 1 in 10,000 and, in my estimation that is far too high. Some experts state there is no risk at all from oral sex.  Neither of us on this site have ever seen or reading the medical literature of a convincing instance in which HIV was passed by oral sex.  This includes by all of the people who had blood in their mouths, mouth sores, rough oral sex, gum disease, etc.

I AM IN A VERY SIMILAR SITUATION! I hope we are okay. I hear there is no risk with oral sex but I'm worried because its hard to prove.
