Going Crazy

hello doc and thanks for taking the time to answer my question..
on 08/10/2011 I had an affair with a woman without a condom and later found out she was hiv positive..
I have not had sex with my wife because of my guilt and scared of me having hiv and passing to her.
3 weeks after my exposure i had a bad sore throat, cough, runny nose, headache. 3 months later i had a bad sore throat again with a runny nose. I became parranoid so i had the following test.

at 4 weeks: Naat and antibody both negative.
at 8 weeks: Antibody test: neg
at 14 weeks: hiv screen test: neg
at 6 months : naat test + antibody test.: both neg.

so i felt good after the last test so i had unprottected sex with my wife who 2 days later had a bad sore throat, along with a really bad cough and runny nose. To add to that 2 weeks after we had sex she now has a yeast infection and is pregnant. I am scared to death I passed it to her.

my questions are is it possible for me to be infected and the test not pick it up?
i have read sometimes it takes more than 6 months for test to become positive. Please help.

You meant on your first reply that 4 weeks a naat test and an antibody test means I DIDNT get hiv right?

Also I'm sorry to bother you again but my wife now has trouble back and headaches. Shes also has chills at night wich makes me paranoid..Thanks again that will be it from me.

This will be the final answer,.

Yes, both antibody tests and NAAT tests detect both HIV-1 and HIV-2.

Believe the test results.  EWH

Thanks alot doc.

Last question. Does the naat test detect hiv 1 and 2?
Does it take longer for hiv 2 to produce antibodys? Those are my last questions I promise. Have a good evening.

No, while the odds of infection are higher with anal sex but that in no way changes the facts provided by your test results.

No, it never takes 6 months.

As for your wife's symptoms, I cannot comment other than to say that they are ot due to an HIV infection you aquired and transmitted to her in the encounter you decribe. The tests prove this.  EWH

Welcome to our Forum.  Rather than write a long, involved answer I will get straight to the point. There is simply no way that you got HIV from the encounter you describe. The combination of a negative HIV NAAT and a negative HIV antibody test at any time for that 4 weeks after exposure is proof that you did get HIV.  you have now been tested on multiple occasions- believe the test results.

In passing I will also point out that unprotected vaginal sex with an HIV infected sex partner results in HIV transmission only once in 1000 sex acts and if she happened to be on therapy at the time, the odds of infection are even lower.  Your tests proved that the odds worked in your favor.

At this time further testing is a waste of time and money. there is no need for you to abstain further from sex with your wife either.

I hope my comment is helpful to you. EWH
