HIV possible

Hi -

I spent the night last night at my friend's friend's house and I do not know this person that well.  All 3 of us were drinking and I ended up sleeping over at this persons house (no sexual contact at all) and in the morning I noticed that I used one of their contact lenses cases.  I wasnt even aware that he wore lenses...I do not remember if i rinsed out or what...i would assume perhaps that this was an extra of his but lets say it was contact solution that his contacts were in and he was positive, is it at all possible for me to have been infected? I didnt see any blood or anything in the solution in the morning.

Thank you.

Hi Doctor -

THank you for your reply and I understand about the postings but I just wanted to clarify one point.  I did not share his contacts, I put mine into a contact case that may or may not have had old solution in it...I do not recall if I put new solution in it.  But they were my contacts in the case.

THank you.

HIV is transmitted by sex and by intimate exposure to blood, most commonly by shared injection equipment.  It has never been reported to be transmitted by shared contact lenses, and I doubt there is any risk.  And the saline solution used to store contact lenses usually has preservatives that would kill the virus.  In any case, it is probably unlikely that your friend has HIV.

My advice is that you contact your friend and ask about his HIV status.  If it turns out he is infected, I would then advice you to see a local HIV prevention expert and ask about your risks and their advice about post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) with anti-HIV drugs.  But I doubt they would recommend PEP in this sort of circumstance.

This is your second post on the forum in a couple of days.  Please note that MedHelp permits no more than 2 questions every 6 months on each of the professionally moderated forums, so this will have to be your last before next summer.  Don't risk losing your posting fee on a question that would be deleted without reply.  (The reason for the rule is to prevent domination of the forums by anxiety-driven questions.)
