Help Doctors

Hello,

I have not been able to sleep in quite days because of anxiety attacks thinking that i have the HIV virus. I used a condom, but I do not know if i broke. Anxiety is driving me crazy. In the tests I have 6 weeks after - negative. I took another tests 9 weeks afterwards - and negative again. In both of them my defenses are 105% (hemoglobins).

I do not know how the 3 month rule works and it's killing me thinking that I could be positive in the 3 more weeks ahead. The test I took is HIV 1/2.

Tell me that I am OK. Please I need help so I can sleep again.

What are my risks of having HIV?

You had protected sex,  If the condom had broken you would know it.  You said nothing about your partner so I suspect you do not know his/her HIV infection status but let's look at the odds:

1.  You do not know your partner's HIV infection status.  That being  the case, perhaps a 10% (1 in 10) chance, max.
2.  If partner infected and condom used, chance of infection reduced more than 50%
3.  If condom broke, chance of infection from a single encounter with an infected partner, less than 1 in 1000.
4.  Results at 9 week - more than 98% of infections that are going to occur are detectable.

Taking all of this into consideration, you are far more likely to be hit by lightening while reading this.  EWH

The further out from the exposure, the greater the chance that there will be no infection which becomes apparent after the test.  In your circumstance, I would consider the reults definitive.  The result is numbers of positives detected between 9 and 12 weeks is only about 1% of all positives, the vast majority having already become apparent.  Your risk was negligible to start with so you can already be sure that you are not infected.  EWH

Hey doctor,

Thank you very much for your kind anwser, you made my anxiety go a big time.

I only have 1 question:
1. Is it necessary to wait for the 3 months exact, for the final answer, or should i go on with my life, knowing that 9 weeks means i am ok?

Thank you doctor
