HIV negative at 94 days but still worried

Hi Doc,
I had an unprotected exposure with a Call girl on 18th October, 2010. I started having a swelling at the opening of my salivary duct 10 days after that episode. It does not pain, and I showed the ENT and dentist who both said that it is a buccal mucosa problem and gave me vitamin tablets, amoxycilin for 10 days and wysilone(steroid for four days), but it did not help. I had vitamin tablets for about 2.5 months and since it is not helping me I have stopped taking it.

I also had developed a non-itchy rash about 8 weeks post exposure on the dorsa of my palms which i showed  a dermatologist and he said it is no way an HIV rash and gave me a lotion and xyzal (anti-allergic) tablet. I had xyzal for 8 days and applied the lotion and the rash went away. I must tell you that at this time I was so scared and suffering from anxiety that I also started taking another anti-histamine (Atarax) and Ivemetricin as prescribed by a general physician who thought it was scabies. So for about 8 days I had both Xyzal and Atarax.

However the rashes disappeared after about 2 weeks and by this time my 4th generation Elisa test at 45 and 60 days, RNA PCR at 46 days were all negative.

I got the Call girl tested through Western Blot at 18 days and she was negative too.

I also tested for Mononucleosis at 56 days, Hep B & C at 60 days, Syphillis at 75 days, Herpes 1&2 (IGG and IGM) at 80 days and all were negative.
I also did another HIV combo test at 88 days which came as negative.

But then just at the 90 day mark I started developing hives which were appearing on mainly on my elbow and thighs and a few on my neck and face. I got extremely depressed and again got an ELISA antibody test at 94 days which was negative.
I keep getting the big hives on my elbow and wrist and smaller hives on my cheek and neck, but after applying Calamine lotion they go away.

Please suggest whether I need further testing. What should I do about my swelling of the salivary duct opening and hives?

Hello

The answers to your further questions are:-

1) No

2) No idea - not HIV.

Please note that the more "noise" you generate by repeatedly posting the same question instead of waiting for a response means that your questions are less obvious to us and answers will be delayed.

best regards, Sean

Hello Dr Cummings,
I apologize for my repeated postings but I am unable to explain the amount of anxiety I am through whenever these hives break out.

Anyways thanks a ton for your answer and I am at peace with my mind now.

The last question which is a curiosity is that why some people are asked to test at 6 months?

Regards
Abhishek

Hello Doctor,
Please answer my last two questions. I am in a lot of stress for this. Please Please Please help answering

My name is Abhishek and I am a 36 year old from India. I apologize that I have to ask you two more questions as you know there is a 2000 character limit on asking questions. :-)

1. I had multivitamins for 2.5 months, antihistamines as and when the hives were appearing and amoxycilin for 10 days. Do these medicines affect the result of HIV. I must tell you here that in total I have taken 12 HIV tests in the last 3.5 months over different periods the last one being at 94 days.

2. The hives which are appearing do you think they are because of HIV or any allergy or anxiety? And just out of curiosity why are some people advised to test at 6 months?

Regards
Abhishek

Hello

I think from all the HIV tests you describe you can confidently rule out HIV infection. You have tested both yourself and the lady in question and both are HIV negative. You are HIV negative.

You have also very sensibly carried out a variety of tests looking for syphilis etc and these are negative also.

I'm afraid I can't answer the question regarding your mouth - you will need to go back to your doctor and ask again.

What I can say is that you have not picked up HIV.

best regards, Sean
