Worried and anxious

Hi,
For about 14 days ago, I had an encounter with a transexual sex worker. I was quite intoxicated, it was my first and probably last time I will let my curiosity get the best of me. Anyway, we had protected sex but not protected oral sex. I was quite confident that I did not contract HIV that night since we had protected sex, and oral sex being so rarely the case of contamination(even if unprotected). But lately, I got what I thought was Hay Fever until my lymph nods in my neck started hurting. I suppose this is not common symptoms for Hay fever but according to internet information it is a common symptom for HIV or other viral infections. Never had hay fever before, but I tested positive towards grass pollen, which is in the high season right now.
So, i have started worrying about my health. Do you think this is simply the case of hay fever or do you reckon I should get tested. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Best regards

Dear Dr. Sean
I found out that the SW I had intercourse with is HIV+. It was such a surreal thing to hear, and tons of worried thoughts swept over me. I started thinking about, in worst case scenario, the people I love that I let down over such a petty incident. And on top of that, this was my first time ever with a SW and she, of course, had to be HIV+.
I went to the Clinic today and got myself tested. I had my blood drawn and I got a rapid test, of a new kind, that came out negative. After this, I was checked for such STD as you mentioned above.
What do you think my chances of contracting the infamous virus is? The nice nurse at the clinic was confident that a rapid test of this kind is good indicator on future test results.
Im really hurting right now, this has been my biggest F*** up yet.

Hello Hanson

I do not think you have contracted HIV.

You are right to say that swollen lymph nodes are an unlikely sign/symptom of hay fever, but they are very likely to occur in other much more modest infections - such as a strep throat, a head cold, or possibly a different STD such as gonorrhoea, syphilis etc.

As I say, I do not think HIV is a likely proposition, but I do think you should test for other STD's such as those mentioned above.

If you performed oral sex on this lady then you should also have swabs taken from your throat.

best regards, Sean

Hello Hanson

jones22 has put it very well. You used condoms for penetrative sex. They work extremely well if they are used - so I am confident that all will be well and that you do not have HIV as a result of this.

Actually you did not f*** up. You used condoms for sex and that my friend saved you a hell of a lot more misery.
It is going to be a stressful few weeks regardless of the facts but you will walk away fine.
