Hello,
Many thanks for your post and apologies for not having replied sooner.
Incidence of HIV in Thailand is high among sex workers and gay men. Although the vast majority of women in Thailand are negative. Unfortunately I do not have accurate information on statistics about incidence of HIV there; however they do have access to testing and treatment.
Assuming that she was positive, the risk for you is relatively low. I agree with the previous contributor to your post in saying that your estimated risk from a single encounter would be less than 0.1% or less than 1 in 1,000. Not knowing the status would be even less and having used a condom for most of the intercourse would also reduce this risk even further. In summary, I strongly beleive that your risk of HIV infection was very low.
Regarding testing, you have a number of alternatives as follows, all of them being very reliable provided the window period is the correct one: PCR Multiplex test after one week or a HIV Duo test after 4 weeks.
Kind regards,
Jose
Thans for the post guys but I also thought I paid for a Doc to give their views here? Maybe I got it wrong!
you should be fine but get tested - you in the UK right? You can go to the GUM clinic at your hospital and it's confidential - many now do a DUO test which is very accurate after about a month. I've been to Thailand too and although the HIV infection rate is higher than back home, it's still the case that the majority of Thai women AREN'T infected. Good luck and get some better condoms next time :)
Thanks for the words paranoid but still stressing!!!
chances are good that you did not catch HIV from her. unprotected sex has an HIV transmission possibilty of 0.01%. but for your own piece of mind and to eradicate any doubt, go for an HIV test 30 days post exposure.
Im sure the results will be negative.
good luck
