Oral Hairy Leukoplakia and ARS

I am concerned after a possible exposure to HIV (admittedly low risk).  I am noticing 3 weeks after the event two lateral white lines down the sides of my tongue and am worried that it is oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL).  I went to the doctor for an unrelated reason and they said that it may just be bite marks since it is along the teeth alignment, however I am skeptical.  I am very worried and would appreciate your help by answering a few questions.
1.  Is OHL a possible sign of acute retroviral syndrome (ARS) or is it associated with later stage HIV?
2.  Can OHL be the only symptom of ARS?
3.  Does OHL change appearances over the course of the day or is it constant?

Thank you for your response.  I only have one other question.  Can chewing on the sides of your tongue (unknowingly) lead to an appearance similar to that of OHL?

Yes.

best wishes, Sean

Hello,
Thank you very much for your post and welcome to out forum.
Let me answer your questions here below:
1.  Is OHL a possible sign of acute retroviral syndrome (ARS) or is it associated with later stage HIV?   IT IS USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH HIV IN LATER STAGES AND NOT ACUTE SERO-CONVERSION.  THREE WEEKS AFTER A POSSIBLE INFECTION WOULD BE FAR TOO EARLY AND I DO NOT BELIEVE IT TO BE RELATED.
2.  Can OHL be the only symptom of ARS? NO, NOT AT ALL.
3.  Does OHL change appearances over the course of the day or is it constant?
IT IS USUALLY CONSTANT BUT IT CAN RESOLVE SPONTANEOUSLY.  THERE ARE MANY CAUSES IF IT IS INDEED ORAL HAIRY LEUKOPLAKIA.  MY ADVICE TO YOU IS SEEK ADVICE FORM AN ORAL SURGEON.

Best wishes,
Dr José
