Oral Sex / Cunnilingus

I had protected vaginal intercourse some 8 weeks back with an office collegue who has joined our office some 6 months back. I also performed cunnilingus on her which was not protected and for a few moments I could feel her cumming (vaginal fluid) in my mouth. She also gave me an unprotected blowjob but I did not ejaculate in her mouth. I later asked her if she had any HIV or STD issues as I was scared. She said she is not HIV positive nor does she have any STD/health issues and also she does not have multiple sexual partners. She is single. The condom was intact and there were no signs of any breakage. I have perfect and normal oral health and I also do not have multiple sexual partners. I do not have any visible signs of scar on my penis.

For the last 8 weeks I did not have any fever or all over body macopapular rash or myalgia. In short I did not have any classic ARS symptoms. I have been very vigilant throughout.

For the peace of my mind I will go for a HIV test after 3 months. But I have some questions specially for the medical practioners in this forum:

1. Did I encounter risk of exposure of HIV infection due to cunnilingus in my case?
2. How common is HIV infection only through cunnilingus?
3. Do doctors in such case (as mine) as a protocol suggest HIV test or post-exposure treatment?

Good Morning my Welsh friend!

You have asked:-

1. Did I encounter risk of exposure of HIV infection due to cunnilingus in my case?

No I do not believe so. It is highly unlikely that she would be HIV positive as most people are not. Cunninlingus is an extremely low risk activity if she were to be HIV positive. I do not rate it as a risk.

2. How common is HIV infection only through cunnilingus?

Very very uncommon. Certainly there are reported cases but very few.

3. Do doctors in such case (as mine) as a protocol suggest HIV test or post-exposure treatment?

I recommend periodic HIV and STD testing for all sexually active adults with different partners. The frequency of that testing should change depending on how many partners they have. I do not think you need to rush to have an HIV test in respect of this episode because it appears to be a very low risk episode.

best wishes, Sean

Dear Doc,

Thanks for your reply. I find myself reassured and better prepared mentally. I have had no sex for the last three years after I broke off from my only girlfriend and certainly this is going to be the last unless I am in a permanent relationship.

So in short this was a single episode after nearly three years of abstaining. When do you advise I should go for the STD and HIV tests? It is 10 weeks now since the episode I described above.

Rgds ..
