4 weeks post exposure test

Dear doctor,
Is  a 4 weeks post exposure ELISA 3rd Generation Test is a very good indicator, or if possible, conclusive indication of one's HIV status?

Andrew,

You have to pay for the advice of a doctor.  I will give you some good advice for free.

3 months is considered the international testing 'end period'.  This means that the vast majority of people who are infected with HIV will test positive using 3rd or 4th Generation tests within 3 months post exposure.

Your test at 4 weeks may give you some kind of indication, but to be on the safe side, I would not say conclusive.  The reason for this is because everybody sero-converts (the moment the HIV virus announces itself to the body and is detectable) at different times withint 3 months - this is called the 'Window Period'.

Re-test at the 12 week mark for a conclusive result.

Note - Sometimes a p24 antigen test combined with a HIV Antibody test can give you some kind of indication on a earlier time scale, but they will still make an appointment for you to have a follow up test at 3 months.

If you are suffering from anxiety during this window period, by all means take an early test to relieve your anxiety, but ENSURE that you test at the 12 week mark too.

Hope this helps,

Adam
