HIV Ag/Ab Testing in Malaysia

Hi,

I had unprotected sex and currently really worried. I found out that gribbles in Malaysia provides HIV Ag/Ab testing. Can this test provide accurate results 28 days after exposure or should I wait for 3 months.

Please let me know as I have been feeling worried and stressed.

PCR-RNA are not standalone tests are used in conjunction with antibody tests. PCR-RNA tests can be used to help determine results that have had multiple inconcluse results. Now move on.

what is incorrect.

APTIMA RNA being  approved for diagnostic purpose is by itself an ratification of the tests ability to detect early infection.
tell me why it had to be approved as a diagnostic test when you have anyway to do a
antibody test?
why set somebody on a wild goose chase?
is it not redundant?
is it without application of mind?

i dont think so.
the very fact that it is approved as a diagnostic test by the FDA shows a change of mindset and is a harbinger of change in the guidelines.

every good idea is first ridiculed then questioned before being finaly accepted.

Again you are giving out incorrect information.

No it does not mean a negative is a negative. The antibody test is the only test to give a conclusive result either way.

here is FDA for you from their website for APTIMA RNA test

The test, however, is not meant to be used as a stand-alone test for the diagnosis of HIV-1 infection.  A positive nucleic acid test should be viewed as a unconfirmed test result, indicating probable infection, and should be followed up later with traditional EIA antibody testing to confirm infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

they say that a positive should be rechecked with antibody test but do not say anything about a negative, does it not mean negative is NEGATIVE period.

THe APTIMA RNA test has been approved as a CONFIRMATORY TEST BY THE FDA .
CONFIRMATORY means no more further testing this speaks volumes about the tests reliability.
here is the FDA writeup which says even the western blot may be inconclusive at times does that mean you should not use it,the world uses it for confirmation now NAAT is accepted as confirmatory.check this out

n addition, the APTIMA HIV-1 RNA Qualitative Assay may be used as an additional test to confirm HIV-I infection in an individual whose specimen is repeatedly reactive for HIV-1 antibodies. This is important because the Western blot can, in some instances, be difficult to interpret and may not always provide a conclusive result. The APTIMA test can be used instead of the traditional Western blot test or IFA for confirmation of HIV-1 infection when the screening test result for HIV-1 antibodies is positive.

The sensitivity of the APTIMA(r) HIV-1 RNA Qualitative Assay is comparable to that of FDA approved viral load assays that measure the amount of HIV-1 virus circulating in the blood of patients with established HIV-1 infection to monitor the treatment and progression of AIDS.   Unlike the viral load tests, however, the APTIMA test has been approved for the diagnosis of primary HIV-1 infection, as well as for confirming HIV-1 infection when tests for antibodies to HIV-1 are positive.

The product labeling for this test will be available soon on the list of FDA Licensed/Approved HIV, HTLV and Hepatitis Tests on the FDA web site.

There are NO TESTS marketed or sold that will give a conclusive test earlier than 3 months.
P24 tests are not stand alone tests and are supplemental tests to be used in conjunction with an antibody tests.
PCR-RNA tests are not stand alone tests and like P24 must be used in conjunction with an antibody test
P24 tests are NAAT tests.

Stop giving out incorrect information.

the p24 levels in the blood increase exponentially with RNA levels and would peak at 16 days but both reach detectable levels in 72 hours. the average antibody forms at 22 days hence the conservative approach of 28 days.the DUO test is highly sensitive at 7 days.
The FDA has approved the Aptima HIV RNA test as a confirmatory test recently.this shows the reliability of NAAT tests. the p24 is not a NAAT test but looks for the viral particle rather than the antibody. The odds that you will be missed by the DUO test at 28 days is equal to the odds of lightning striking u and me now.

3 months is when you can obtain a conclusive test result.
