So I went to the doctor and took an HIV test at 6 weeks. I assumed the test was a 5th generation test because I’ve gone directly to the same lab a few times before to get an HIV test and the paper said it was a 5th generation test (antibody and antigen), before the 5th generation it was a 4th generation then they got the 5th generation. I assumed I was in the clear but I got the claim and the test code was 86701. Well the 5th generation test code on the labs website is 87389. They do have 2 other HIV test but there more disease progression and don’t match my claim test code. I researched the 86701 code and it’s an antibody only test and the test code isn’t listed anywhere on the labs website. Do they still have outdated tests that only doctors can test? I’m thinking they actually only have one test (the 5th generation) and that’s what they used. But I’m like why the different code? Why use an outdated test when they have the most current one? I felt good about the test because it was antibody/antigen but now this test code shows only antibody I’m second guessing everything. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is the test code sent to insurance by the lab or the doctor who ordered the test? I’m really stressing about this. I guess I could just call the doctor but thought I would ask for opinions here. This isn’t related to the scenario in my previous post.
