Help - Worried about HIV infection

Hi there,

I have become extremely worried (actually obsessed) with the fact that I may have HIV....

I am American but traveled to Jamaica on vacation where i had a one night stand with a bartender. I was intoxicated (really not proud of this) and cannot completely remember if he kept the condom on the whole time.

I got an extreme case of diarrhea which lasted for about two months upon my return. I don't remember ever having a cold like flu upon my return but it's been about two years since the trip.

About a year ago (almost a year after the trip) i hadn't been feeling well (just had leg surgery - sports injury) and had some stuff in my mouth - self diagnosed myself as having thrush (later found out it wasn't - actually bone growth) but the damage was done, by then had already seen that it was an early sign of HIV....now everything is seeming to point that way - maybe due to super aniexty? the fact that he was from Jamaica is my biggest worry!!!!

I now have chronic diarrhea - my doctor sent me for a stool sample test. I called the hospital today and they said that the doctor would only be back next week but that my results were in and there were problems - now I'm sick with panick!!!! They won't tell me what it is until she returns.

I feel now like i'm getting a chronic cough and worry everytime I get a little sick - the diarreah is my biggest worry.

Please help - I'm so worried...

Hospitals don't do HIV testing before surgery. Anytme an HIV test is to be done on anyone they have to be advised. All hospitals use Universal Precautions.

If you havent put yourself at risk since your surgery you should be good. Mostly all hospitals do blood tests before major surgery including hiv in order to keep the surgical team informed about possible risks.

Hi Teak,

I just got my results back and they were negative for HIV. Thank you for convincing me to get the test done...now I can finally lay this to rest!

My cough actually is gone now - lasted about two days - that's what I mean about the aniexty...blow things way out of proportion. I honestly am so worried every little thing sets me off. I should also clarify that the diarrhea comes and goes - but chronic in the way i mean it's bean an ongoing problem. I can't remember if I had this problem before my trip - seems like I've always had a bad stomach. I also went down south again last June - which is why my doctor sent me for the tests...thinking it could be something tropical?

All this said - everytime the doctors reasure me i still have aniexty - it's also because I'm not honest with them - but I'm really really scared and something always stops me from bringing it up....
