Having open cuts and sores doesn't really change statistics regarding oral sex. The environment virus founds would be too hostile, whether there are cuts or not. The risk is negligible. Saliva neutralizes the virus.
calm down man...your friend is right...rationally you shouldn't spend even a minute's time worrying about getting HIV from that situation. Do your regular check up when ever that comes up, but put it out of your head because it's not something to be concerned over.

I just talked to an HIV-positive friend who said that the sore would have to be bleeding for it to be high risk because HIV needs access to the bloodstream. Factor that with saliva and exposure to air, and he said I should not be too scared.
