Oral sex with HIV positive partner

Hello all,

I am a gay male in my early 30s and regularly get tested for STIs. I have alway practiced safe sex for penetration and I am as per my last test HIV negative. I have been dating a guy for the past 3 weeks. Whilst we have not had sex yet, we have had oral sex.

Last week we did both receptive and insertive oral on one another. I had a swollen gum and had bitten my inner cheek the day before I gave. During oral I tasted pre-cum. Is this a risk?

Since then we have only kissed as I have developed a couple of mouth ulcers on inside my lips and on my tongue due to biting myself - I have a stressful job. I understand that kissing, with or without mouth ulcers / scrapes, is not risk.

The guy I am seeing has recently informed me that he is HIV positive and has been for the past 10+ years. He advised me that he is on an antiviral regime - I do not know his viral load etc.

Do I need to get tested over me giving him oral with precum involved as I had a swollen gum/ inner cheek bite or is that just unnecessary ?

As I am keen on this person, I would like to continue seeing them and take intimacy to the next level. I think I will discuss with my Dr about going on prep.

Thanks so much for reading.

The risks and ONLY risks for contracting HIV are to have UNPROTECTED vaginal or anal sex (with penetration) or to share IV needles to inject drugs. Those are the only risks. Air and saliva both inactivate the virus. This is why no one in the history of HIV has gotten it from giving or receiving oral sex or kissing or touching.

With that said, if you are in a relationship with someone that is HIV positive, you need to get educated. If every time you are intimate with him, you freak out and wonder about hiv, this won't work. Unless you have unprotected anal sex with him, you aren't at risk. If you plan to have unprotected anal sex, Prep is something to talk to your doctor about. Glad to see you are discussing this.

But you can't get HIV from kissing, oral or anything else like that.
