PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THE FIRST THING ABOUT HIV...

Is it me? -or- do we seem to be living in the 80's sometimes man...How is it possible that people still do not seem to know the first thing about hiv, even in this day and age. I knew more about hi / aids  than most of these folks when i was 14! Serious. Very disappointing, the need to do better work to educate teens & adults. Why are there no television spots -or- specials on television -or- something. That's why the brackets keep going up man-ignorance is the culprit man...

Either not looked or the campaigns are not in the media people here have had risks here use or see.
I don't watch much television, read newspapers, I haven't been out drinking or clubbing much recently.
I did see one in a club I was in last weekend. It was on a mirror in the gents and said

'I'll give you one! You don't know what someone with an STI looks like".

That really hit home.

I see ads for hiv meds everywhere & campaigns that feature HIV POSITIVE people, as for preventative adds for hiv-i can't think of any...every things mostly centered around on living w/hiv/aids...

Yes, because sex sells; that's called capitalism? the majority of people do nto want to hear about this deadly virus; they rather see comercials about some skin cream or perfume or make up; that makes them feel good and "look" good.

I considered myself quite HIV aware having had an HIV scare in 2003 with a needlestick injury. I've even lectured friends, women I've been with (protected) who have frequent changes of partner. How on earth I put myself at risk is beyond me.

I remember the public health notice advertisrments on UK television in the 1980s. I don't watch television much or read newspapers like I did so I couldn't compare the current public health education in the media with the 80s.
There seems to be a lot in the way of awareness campaigns in gay bars etc after years of new infections in the gay community slowing they are on the increase again and other STIs are out of control. Also free condoms area avilable from most gay bars locally and venues where MSMs go.

I didn't see such a case in London though, an area with higher HIV prvalence. I was in a gay bar in Soho with a girl friend a few months ago and I didn't see a box with condoms. Also in Vauxhall in some of the 'polysexual' (i.e. mixed) clubs, no sign of free condoms. A public health official I was speaking to a couple of years ago at an event I was working at said in Vauxhall there is possibly as many as 1 in 5 people infected.

However in the hetero community which has the fastest rising number of new infections (IIRC particulary amongst women) there doesn't appear to be much in the way of awareness campaigns and if there are they don't run all the time.
A couple of years ago in any bar I was in when one visited the loo there were STI awareness posters at every urinal. These advertising spaces seem to have been taken over by online gaming (the encouragement of risk-taking activities) companies and Satnav companies.
Anything I have seen recently has been campaigning about STIs in general. They have been slick afverts and not with the same gravitas as back in the 80s.

In a recent poll of Scots I saw on the front page of a tabloid a huge number of those polled couldn't name all the routes of infectton. Some thought a cure and vaccine was available.

Instead of dismissing and ridiculing a ww maybe we should be more open and do our thing constructively man-i've got 11 messages between today and yesterday-same questions on the forum, unsatisfactory answered or answered abrasively according to the poster, so don't chastise me, take a look at the demeanor of some of your responses to some. Yes i'm guilty of certain things, but not intimidation or bullying or unrelated banter crushing a thread of the concerned-it's been mentioned to me-the names are private and don't include Tee-38, but some other. None of us are the expert-i've seen everyone leave a response that could use further elaborations-this is what prompts people to continue to ask questions many times over. They feel they have been unduly dismissed my friends. These are mainly threads that i left untouched but other have weighted in on, so go figure, uh....be more accommidating or be an internet critic-your call. I do my best to help, that's all...

Seems like SOME people are taking the wrong things away from the point of the post-which is not to be down on those who are not in the know but to spotlight the need for the average person to have the knowledge they need to protect themselves / friends and family from hiv right folks...

Hey look, many people are uneducated and its real sad, most think that after one time of unprotected sex with someone they say they know well, that they are fine. And people that are in monogomus* relationships say that they are fine. I get tired of people, saying, "i know that im fine, i dont have to get tested". People are naive to think that it cant happen to them. I never thought that it couldnt happen to me, and i also thought that i would never worry about my situation. It definately made me more aware. After doing my research there are some things that are highly unlikely to happen, but the possibility still exist.

I wonder how many jocks get the hiv / aids bomb dropped on there a$$e$ because they stereotype there chances of catching the damn thing man...all it takes is for one straight or bi-sexual guy to infiltrate the circle -say some guy that goes with a csw unprotected for instance, does not test and then seroconverts without knowing, ect, ect man...people are going to keep getting Darwin Awards handed to them if they don't learn what the score is man. Families should be talking to there kids and getting tested every year if they have sex...oh well...

i agree, i think people were very scared about hiv years ago when they realized it could become an epidemic and since then there seems to be less press.  my best friend has buddies he parties with that never use condoms.  i mean never.  they have banged hundreds of girls and have never been tested.  it seems like they either don't care to know or are uneducated.  yes, heterosexual sex is lower risk, especially for the guy...but come on that is crazy.  it just goes to show that we are worries-yes, but atleast we try to be educated.
