Hi - this is a forum for assessing HIV risk, and for questions about testing.  If you have been diagnosed with PCP, your physician will work to find the cause.  If you would like to know whether you have had a risk for HIV, or when to test, please post those questions here.  Our members are not able to assess whether you have PCP and if so, why.

However, it can cause a lung infection in people with a weakened immune system due to:
•Cancer
•Chronic use of corticosteroids or other medications that weaken the immune system
•HIV/AIDS
•Organ or bone marrow transplant

Pneumocystis jiroveci was a relatively rare infection before the AIDS epidemic. Before the use of preventive antibiotics for the condition, most people in the United States with advanced AIDS would develop it.
