Possible Sports Exposure

Hi I'm asking this question for my brother.

Today we were playing soccer when my brother, who had already been kicked in the shin, collided shins with another unknown player.  My brother said he started bleeding, and that the other person might have been bleeding as well.  Is it possible to become infected like this? Technically it is blood exchange, at a very small level I suppose.

That's ok- we're here to answer questions.

Your brother already had a scabbed over wound from a previous injury. When he collided with the other player, I assume the scab was ripped off. This does not result in INSTANT bleeding. It takes a few seconds for blood to actually come forth from the wound. And I assure you that there would not be enough blood from the other player to pose a risk.

Although these facts do not really matter because HIV cannot be transmitted outside of its host. Besides, for open wounds/cuts to be a risk, they must be VERY deep so that HIV is able to have access to the venous system. I know for a fact that your brother's wound re-opening and bleeding is NOT a cause for concern. It is simply not a serious enough injury to become a risk for HIV transmission.

Thank you very much, if it means anything, you have greatly reduced my anxiety, and it is hard to do that.

Doesn't matter at all. No risk

So it doesn't matter that it was more like a bruise than a scab that broke open?

And by "very deep" I mean deep enough to require medical attention and stitches.

I understand that you are very knowledgeable when it comes to HIV/AIDS, and I do believe you, but can you tell me why this is a no risk situation?

By the way, I have anxiety issues, especially about diseases, so if this sounds redundant, its the anxiety typing.

Thank you!
