Skin procedure.

Dear Doctors,

I am taking the liberty of copying a question I have just asked on the community forum.

Although my unpotected sex concerns belong to the past, I have recently become extremely distressed about another risky event I went through. Actually I am not sure that is risky at all, and that is why I am asking for your advice with that respect.

I underwent a procedure to remove my acne spots in a beauty salon, downtown Moscow, Russia. The procedure obviously involved piercing the pimples with an instrument. When pierced, the pimples bleed.

The salon seems good, in a highly prestigious area, it is licensed : I saw the documents, which are stuck at the entrance wall, but have no clue whether or not they are falsified). There is nothing seemingly unclean about the place, although there are very very few clients and it's a bit dark. The doctors are supposed to be competent, but it's not something I am able to appraise. The main doctor claims to be "candidate of sciences" -which alledgedly is roughly the equivalent of a PHD degree.

I failed to ask them what their sterilization method is, hence my worry.

I do understand I must have some kind of mental health issue (anxiety etc.) but still. And all that business with the doctor in Oklahoma fuels my feeling of distress.

Is it possible that I got HIV from unsterilized instruments through such a procedure ?

Welcome to our Forum.  I'll try to help however the real issue to deal with here is your anxiety.  Typically establishments of the sort you describe follow well described sterilization procedures as a matter of standard practice as well as because use of sterile procedures is a requirement for licensure.  Furthermore, not only would the instruments used to perform your procedures need to have been used on another client but, in addition, the person who the instruments were used on before you would have needed to have HIV (unlikely), and finally, the instruments would have needed to be re-used quickly as HIV dies very quickly on exposure to the environment.

I am confident that you have little to worry about related to this event.  EWH
