Thailand and SEA-Hetero Risk and Subtype E

I'm posting this because it relates to me and many, many others on this forum, and perhaps it will make others think twice before engaging in sex with a CSW, unprotected in Thailand or any other SEA country.

It is well documented that the South East Asian countries Have a different strain of HIV-1 to Western countries. It is a subtype that is peculiar to this region called HIV Subtype-E. This subtype is known to be much easier to transfer from fluids than any other and is very similar to the type found almost exclusively in Western and Central Africa. It is estimated (but not proven) that Subtype E may be up to 50 times as high as the regular HIV-1 Subtype B group. Estimates by the University of New South Wales, Australia predict that whilst "western" HIV may transfer at about 1 in 500 to 1 in 1000 instances of Heterosexual intercourse, this subtype HIV may transfer in about 1 in 30 to 1in 50 times. The estimates go on to say that of 2000 HIV infected patients, approximately 82% have subtype E (95% of subtype E infections contracted heterosexually), and approximately 13% have subtype B

By the way, I'm not pulling this information out of my arse, you can find a lot of it here http://www.thailandguru.com/hiv-aids-thailand.html, but also in other places on the internet such as free online med journals.

The other worrisome statistic is to do with CSW's. Even though Dr. HHH, who is usually a fountain of knowledge says that CSW's have a lower chance of HIV, this is not the case. Whilst it may be true in Western countries, where Subtype-B is prevalent, this is not true in South East Asia. Widely available statistics estimate that %10 of CSW's in Expat area's in Bangkok have HIV - I should add that the web article states that this information may be inaccurate due to the Bias of sampling. Still a startling find, no doubt.

The same is quite uniform in the SEA region, although Thailand hs the highest percentage population living with HIV in that region. It is also the biggest tourist, particularly sex tourist country in that region.

So next time you're in Thailand - WEAR A CONDOM! Or better yet, find a nice traveling girl to have sex with and avoid the whole prostitution thing altogether.

There are not true subtype E's. It has been discussed over and over again on this forum. They are CRFs that can be picked up by any test. They are found in HIV1, group M.

A traveling girl is a prostitute, I fail to see how this is a safer option.

I will go to the other posts to see what you are talking about Teak - as far as i have read subtype E sounds verifiable, simply by the statistics of heterosexuual couples in SEA who have contracted HIV VS. Statistics of Homosexual. Also by the countless studies done by Universities all over the world. I will read more, as i would love it not to be true haha.

To wear/a/jimmy - The reference to "traveling girl' is a reference to any girl traveling along from another country such as the US or Sweden or Holland - the very same kind of girl who you find back home who carries a minor risk of HIV, unlike CSW's in Thailand who carry a major risk .
