University student with past personal myths

Hi Docter,

I am a 19 year old heterosexual white male from Canada and am currently in my first year of university. I met a girl half way through the first semester and we began having unprotected sex shortly after. This continued regularly for a couple of months. Looking back in retrospect I dont know what I was thinking. For some reason I thought I was free from the repercussions. Anyway, something happened to me over the break that changed me. I dont know if it was seeing my parents for the first time in months or what but I began applying myself really hard to school and put a stop to our promiscuity completely.

Its been two months now and for the past month I have not gone a single day without considering the possibilities of HIV. Most of the time I can continue with my day as usual but sometimes the anxiety builds and I have no motivation to do anything. About a month after my last exposure I experienced a slight headache and felt a little sick to my stomach. This occured at night and the next morning I woke up feeling fine. However, over the following two weeks I experienced a sore throat followed by a runny nose/sinus infection??? And now almost a month later Im beginning to notice glands in my neck and groin. Theyre not painful and Im not even sure if they would be considered swollen or not, but they seem to have gotten slightly larger.

Me and her are still friends. She is 19 like me and from Quebec. I trust her when she tells me she was tested after her last boyfriend but what worries me is that she was tested immediately after they broke up leaving a possibility for infection during the "window period". Her last relationship was with a 21 year old heterosexual white male; non drug user. He admitted to having 18 different partners.  She is being very supportive and agreed to get tested to clear both of our names but we wont have results for another month.

Im hoping you can tell me that Im being irrational for letting this interrupt my studies, but Im prepared for whatever opinion you have to offer. I just hope I can come away from this unscathed and with a lesson well learnt.

Much appreciated,

Dan

The "we will not have the results"- gave the impression of testing...also the "she agreed to test- seemed to imply that they went into get tested together, as opposed to saying -she will not have her test results...

It is very very rare for anyone to test longer than 3 months. Those that might are persons on Chemo, persons on anirejection drugs for transplants and some chronic IV drug abusers. Other than that everyone will have a conclusive test result by 3 month and the others will know in advance that they may need to test longer than 3 months.

Hi Dan,

hehehe....I would recommend testing for STDs, including HIV, for all sexually active people every 6 monthly or yearly.

Hmm....personally I would go for the test myself, we cannot determine our HIV status unless we tested ourself.

Oh, so I did'nt read wrongly..... kekeke

Alright, thanks guys... to clarify, its her thats being tested. Shes been my only risky encounter so if I picked up anything it would have been from her. Also, in this way I dont have to worry about the "window period".

Just a personal thought...

If you would like to use "97% will test positive in 3 months", you may wish to highlight in your reply, what is the make-up of the other 3%.

This way, the readers will not get too overly scared.

This is not a scare tatic, it's a fact...there are variables that are no reason for worry or make any need for re-testing-are you really hearing this for the first time man? Most any major site states this, anywhere as low as 95% to -99.6%, there is no 100%, but i mainly see 99.3% and 99.6%, never 100%. There is no cause for worry unless you choose to worry about very slight odds.

So you mean 3 months is not absolute conclusive? So do we need to test at 6 months or 1 year...since nothing is 100%.

What i am trying to say here is, 3 months is conclusive.  We do not need to add in 97% conclusive.......why scared yourslef and those who is anxious.....

C'mon man, are you really saying that if you had a glass of water that was 97% full of water that you would not have enough water in the glass to drink?

"What i mean is nothing is 100%, 97% is as close as a three month negative gets, that more than good enough. "

This is why forums shatter peoples confidence and cause unnecessary worry and anguish.

What i mean is nothing is 100%, 97% is as close as a three month negative gets, that more than good enough. The CDC states this, the variables range from anywhere between 95-99% on most major sites Uniquely-men.

Oh, did I missed out what he has written in this thread?..... I did'nt realised he has tested.

Btw, what do you mean 97% conclusive at 3 months.  Conclusive is conlusive....

Cheers!

I agree with you, but you don't want to give him the idea that engaging in unprotected intercourse is an okay thing to do either.

Joking aside, a guy meets a girl , go out together and they have sex. I know safe sex makes sense if you`re into casual sex but how is your average Joe meant to settle down and have a family for example, with all this HIV panic? It`s not like she was `high risk`. I`d be more concerned with her getting pregnant than anything else.As for her ex, slight exaggeration I think on his conquests.
You want to know what i think? The bloody internet and misinformation has a lot to answer for.
As for you having HIV, theres more chance of throwing a boomerang away.

Dan tested at two months after exposure and is awaiting his results, he is at the 8 weeks mark in the window period right now, he only needs one more test at the 12 week mark to find out his true status.

You only need test one more time by the way, at three months after your last unprotected encounter you will be 97% conclusive afterwards. If the result you took at two months is hiv negative then consider it a good indication of your status although not conclusive, a three months hiv negative test result is a true indication of your status.

Hello,
Condoms are a must from now on Dan-really... but don't look back & don't beat yourself up man.  I think your going to make it based on what you said, but the only concerns are the fact that you went in unprotected and the other boyfriends profile, that's a lot of notches for 21 yrs old. As for your symptoms, don't concentrate too heavily on them, many people experience anxiety based symptoms while awaiting there results...good luck to you in your studies and stay safe my friend, aids is serious biz, don't let your guard down again....

Hi there,

If you had unprotected sex with someone of unknown status, you are at risk if she has  HIV.  Her last test result is encouraging.

Your symptoms are not ARS specific.  Do not scare yourself with the signs and symptoms (yours don't sound like ARS, running nose is not a symptoms for ARS)

You can go for a HIV test earlist at the 1st month and repeat at the 3rd month after the last exposure for a conclusive result.

I recommend you test at 6 weeks after the last possible exposure for a prelimenary result. If you test negative the likelihood that will change by 12 weeks is remote.
