What Other Than HIV Causes ELISA To Show Positive?

I am a Gay Black male and I have been in a monogomous reationship for the last 15 months.  The last time I was involved with anyone that I would consider at risk (unprotected sex) was 16 months ago.  More than 6 weeks and prior to my new relationship, I was tested with ELISA and Western Blot and both came back netative.  My new partner waited 3 month after his last potential expusure and was tested with OraQuick and he tested negative.  We are committed to monogomy and so, we stopped using condoms.  I am not the passive (receiving insertion) in this realationship and I never have been passive in the past.

On June 26, during my recent annual checkup, I was tested again with ELISA and Western Blot.  On July 8, I received my relsults and ELISA came back positive and Western Blot negative.  I was beside myself of course.  My Dr. submitted more samples for retesting.  I went home and informed my partner and we decided to go to a local free testing center and both took the QraQuick Advance test and both tested negative.

Yesterday, I received my second ELISA and Western Blot and the outcome was the same as before except the ELISA number was lower (first time 2.66H, second time 2.09H)  but the Western Blot once again shows an absence of virus and my Dr. concluded that I am indeed negative.  He asked me if I have a history of rumatoid Arthritus our Lupus in my family, but I an 52 and most of my relatives are deceased, and I am not sure.

He wants me to retest in 3 months, but I feel like I need to either get a second opinion or at least find out what continues to produce my false positives.

Any help  you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for providing this forum and I hope everyone takes this seriously.  I have read some pretty silly questions on here that I persume to be from pranksters.  HIV is no laughing matter.

I agree with Teak.  A repeatedly negative western blot means that the ELISA was a false positive.  You're fine.

i highly doubt that the anitbodies that you developed because of this mouth thing is the reason that you tested positive.

we all have antibodies in our system at any given time fighting off little beasties in our bodies that you don't even know is going on.  if this was the case then everyone would be having a false positive.  For example I had HPV at the time I tested, didn't know about the HPV and my test came back negative, but if the antibody thing was true then i should have had a false positive.

The Elisa test looks for the HIV antibodies only.  However, that being said there are a few antibodies that react similarily to the HIV antibodies and could cause a false positive (syphillis/Hep).

But it was said above that the western blot trumps the Elisa so you are negative.

I have been vacinated for both HEP. B and A and I tested negative to C.  Other than I need to watch my cholesteral, my physical was piture perfect.  But, I believe I know what has caused this positive reading.

A year ago, after my last total negative test, I started wearing Invisaligne braces to straighten my teeth.  As my teeth have moved, of course my mouth gets very tender and no matter how many times I brush my teeth and especially in the morning, there is a build up of white mucus (sorry to be grosse) in my mouth all around the braces.  I never mentioned this to my Dr. because it never occured to me.  I am thinking that I have developed antibodies to my braces and that might be what is causing the ELISA positive reading.  I am going to email my Dr. with this information to day.  During my last check up, his med assistant checked my blood preasure, wheight and temp., but he never used a tongue depresser to look into my mouth or he would have seen the last tray on my bottom teeth.

This could be a stretch, but it is the only life change that I can think of, because I have not been at risk for 16 months now, and my partner tested negative.

At any rate, thank God for the Western Blot and OraQuick Advance tests!

There could be another infection present in your body. Have you been tested for Hepatitis? I am not saying thats what you have but Hep is much more easier to get than HIV. If you have been tested already than you should ask your doctor for a blood culture.

Hi

I think usually they do a rapid INST or elisa or DUO depending on intervals.....and if any are positive you have to go for more testing, coz they can be false positives due to other reasons as Teak said.

Hi,

If Western Blot trumps an ELISA test all the time then why don't hospitals run a Western Blot test all the time and not take the chance of giving somebody a false +ve? I am sure the man here was devestated when he got his ELISA results.

It does happen and the cause can be a number of reasons. That is the reason for a Western Blot. A Western Blot trumps an ELISA test. You are conclusively negative.
