defective condoms?

hello, i posted this on the expert forum, as an additional comment to an exisiting thread. whilst strictly speaking it might have been in violation of the forum rules, i think that the question is a general one which merits an answer, so maybe someone can check out with the docs to see what they think:

the general understanding is that condom protected (vaginal) sex is safe, unless the condom fails/splits/tears/rips, in which case this would be visible to the naked eye. however, i have read that condoms can be defective in manufacture i.e. have small holes which pass the testing phase, and that these small holes would need a microscope to be seen. this is because manufacturers do not test every single condom, but only samples from each batch/lot. moreover, there must be a certain number of defective condoms in each batch/lot, for the batch/lot to be discarded.

i apologise...it's that - thinking aloud - the article seems to state that not all condoms are tested, and therefore there could be defective ones..of course i fully concur with the correct and consistent use issue...just that i wished that the doctors would perhaps be able to give their professional opinion on this matter.

Then why are you posting on an HIV forum? You didn't have a risk of contracting HIV. You had protected sex and condoms are very reliable in preventing HIV and other STDs, if used correctly and consistently.

actually the problem is that i had condom protected oral and vaginal sex with a couple of prostitutes so i do not know the manufacturer. however both doctors said my exposures are not suggestive of risk....i was sober in both cases, and did not see any tears or whatever in condoms.

Try reading more updated material or go directly to the website of the condom manufactures.
